Tomorrow, Tuesday 23rd in Kitui County we launch a campaign that will invigorate the livelihoods of pastoral communities.

The De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) project funded by the World Bank has successfully been launched in 12 ASAL counties, with about 108,694 pastoralists insuring their livestock. The Ksh 16.08B project which is expected to benefit 125,000 pastoral households over a five- year period is geared towards offering pastoral communities viable solutions that prevent against adverse drought risks.

DRIVE has successfully launched in the following 12 counties: Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Laikipia, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Samburu, Narok and Kajiado.

I joined Kitui County Commissioner, officials from the County and National Governments’ Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, along with other stakeholders and farmers for the launch of the De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) Project in Kitui today.

I urged the participants to take advantage of the insurance package being offered as part of concerted efforts to mitigate drought.

The project aims to enhance livestock commercialization, assisting farmers in rearing the right breeds while the government provides a market for livestock and livestock products.

This presents an opportunity to create much-needed jobs for Kenyans.

I chaired the De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) Project Steering Committee meeting this morning at the ZEP-RE office.

The session focused on logistical concerns and status updates from the DRIVE implementing partners, ZEP-RE, KDC and the State Department for Livestock Development.

The project continues to empower pastoral communities in ASAL counties as we strive to avert the risk of drought.

In a bid to invigorate the livelihoods of pastoral communities in Kitui County, a groundbreaking initiative is set to unfold.

The De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) project, funded by the @WorldBank, aims to revolutionize the livestock sector, offering pastoralists viable solutions to mitigate against adverse drought risks.

Under the leadership of PS @jmueke of the State Department of Livestock Development, the DRIVE project has already made remarkable strides, successfully launching in 12 ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) counties.

With approximately 108,694 pastoralists already insuring their livestock, the project's impact is tangible and poised to expand.

The Ksh 16.08B initiative is expected to benefit 125,000 pastoral households over a five-year period, providing financial interventions and fostering resilience against drought.

Through two pivotal components, the DRIVE project aims to enhance financial inclusion, facilitate livestock trade, and upgrade value chains, ultimately bolstering the economic prosperity of pastoral economies.

Its first component offers a suite of financial services, including index-based livestock insurance (IBLI), incentives for savings, and financial education.

DRIVE' second component focuses on mobilizing private investments into livestock value chains and facilitating trade, amplifying market access for pastoralists.

As the DRIVE project extends its reach to Kitui County, a crucial activity unfolds - the delineation of Unit Area Insurances (UAIs) for Index-Based Livestock Insurance.

This participatory process involves local experts and community stakeholders, ensuring the accurate mapping of UAIs tailored to Kitui's unique ecological and climatic conditions.

Some of our areas of focus in the State Department for Livestock Development in collaboration with counties include an upcoming nationwide animal vaccination program and an animal traceability model.

These initiatives aim to contribute to increased productivity, production, and value addition for enhanced market value.
