🏘️ Communities at the Heart of Safer Motherhood

At the Inaugural PPH Conference 2026, Domorita H. highlighted the impact of community-based Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocacy in improving maternal health awareness and increasing referral uptake in West Pokot County, Kenya.

The presentation demonstrated how empowering communities with knowledge, engaging local stakeholders, and strengthening referral pathways can help women access skilled maternal care at the right time. It reinforced that informed communities are essential partners in preventing postpartum haemorrhage and reducing preventable maternal deaths.

When communities are empowered, mothers are protected—and together, we can build a future where every woman has access to safe, timely, and quality maternal healthcare.

In Narok County, community-based organizations came together through the #Accelerate Program, funded by the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya, to strengthen how their work translates into measurable impact.

These organizations are not working in isolation. They are closing gaps in access, strengthening referral systems, and ensuring that women and families are connected to care earlier and more consistently. This has resulted in more women accessing reproductive health services, survivors of GBV being identified and supported and communities being more informed and better connected to care.
This is what stronger community systems look like; responsive, coordinated, and grounded in real-time realities.

The convening focused on sharpening this further, improving how data is captured, how community feedback is used, and how results inform decisions across counties.

Together, they are advancing progress toward zero maternal deaths, zero GBV, and zero unmet need for contraception, turning community action into measurable results.

Sustained investment in these systems will be critical to expanding reach, strengthening outcomes, and ensuring no community is left behind.

This International Women's Day, we’re celebrating women who give their best to their communities. Under this year’s theme, #GivetoGain, PS Kenya, through the Accelerate Program, worked with women leaders and CBO champions to strengthen their capacity and expand their reach. We gave training, exposure, and networking opportunities at the NTV Kenya IWD celebration forum, enabling them to engage in national conversations and bring back knowledge to their communities.

The gain is tangible: these leaders are now better equipped to drive maternal health initiatives, advance sexual and reproductive health rights, and enforce zero tolerance for harmful practices in their counties. This is how we ensure sustainable, community-led change reaches every corner of Kenya.
