The concerns about rising inflation in Jamaica are both serious and justified. A significant share of the inflationary pressures is cost-driven, reflecting higher energy, raw material, labour, shipping and other operating costs.

Monetary policy alone cannot resolve these supply-side pressures. A sustainable response must also focus on improving productivity, reducing input costs, addressing inefficiencies and leakages in public revenue and expenditure, and lowering the cost of doing business.

The headwinds are real, and households are being forced to make difficult decisions. Reduced disposable income can weaken consumer demand, which may directly affect business revenues and performance, which can reduce GoJ revenue intake.

The challenge for the Government and @CentralBankJA is to contain inflation without unnecessarily constraining productive economic activity. For companies, the challenge is to balance affordable prices for customers with the need to manage rising costs in an environment of persistently low productivity. Caught between a rock and hard place.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about love is that you cannot build a healthy relationship with someone who refuses to reflect on themselves.
