I undertook my pupillage under the late L.G. Menezes (MHSRIP), a great teacher and exceptional litigator. He taught me to know my file, master the art of cross-examination and always be prepared. My drafting skills were honed there too, a letter could come back three times until you got it right! 😄

I was admitted to the Bar on 15 November 2005, ready to conquer the world. Practice was an adventure, Homa Bay court meant catching Dao Biro mini bus at 5.00 a.m. on terrible roads, sometimes only to arrive and find the magistrate was not sitting.

The Bar was smaller and collegial; we learnt from seniors and peers. Research was manual, with JA G.V. Odunga, aka “Stone Cold,” a go-to person for authorities.

Updating statutes meant literally cutting out Gazette Notices and sticking the amendments into your statute. 😂

The more papers sticking out, the more updated and serious you looked!

How is it fallacious and stupid (ufala na ujinga) of Edwin Sifuna to indicate that he will remove and replace SHA when William Ruto removed and replaced NHIF with SHA? Was there no legal framework for NHIF then just as there is one for SHA now? Is the law on SHA cast in stone? The President should not think that Kenyans are naive na mafala! They are not.

DPP to present sentencing submissions in Obado murder case.

Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his two co-accused, Michael Oyzamo and Caspal Obiero, will appear before the High Court on 16th September 2026 for mitigation and sentence hearing following their conviction in the murder of Sharon Otieno.

The three convicted persons today appeared virtually before Lady Justice C.W. Githua, where the Probation Department informed the Court that it had filed probation reports relating to each of them.

The Court was informed that the reports had been filed earlier in the day but were yet to be served on all Defence Counsel. The Court consequently directed that the reports be served on all parties ahead of the sentencing hearing.

The Court also directed advocates representing the victim’s family to file and serve a Victim Impact Statement on all parties within seven days.

Prosecution, through Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Ms. Wangui Gichuhi, will present its sentencing submissions, while Defence Counsel will make submissions on mitigation.

The sentencing will take into consideration the probation reports, the Victim Impact Statement, the Prosecution’s submissions and the Defence mitigation.

The Sentencing Policy Guidelines, 2023, mandate the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to objectively assist the Court during sentencing by placing before it all matters relevant to determining an appropriate sentence. These include the applicable law, aggravating circumstances, relevant judicial precedents and any other matter that the Court may properly consider in determining the appropriate sentence.
