I have no frame of reference, I can't compare it to the sentiments of US soldiers in previous conflicts. But I suspect these are new sentiments, or at least a new willingness to express them this openly and directly.

But as one serviceman told me: "What people in the media don't understand when they compare past conflicts to this one, is this operation has no morale behind it. That makes a world of difference to service members deployed to undesirable locations indefinitely."

Read that last part again: No morale. Deployed to undesirable locations INDEFINITELY.

You can love and respect the land you were born on or live on and its natives. I love Britain and have respect for its people. It is natural and good to feel a belonging. But you do not have to claim another native identity to assert your civic rights.

It is also just wrong.

Especially if you are Muslim—your nasab (biological lineage) and asl (fundamental origin) do not change based on where you are born.

There is a difference between mawlid (birthplace), mansha' (where you are raised), and asl (fundamental root).

The word asl literally means the root of a tree.

If you take a seed from a Jordanian palm tree and plant it in the soil of London, the tree that grows is still a Jordanian palm tree by asl.

It is nourished by English soil, it breathes English air, and its physical location is Britain, but its asl (its genetic blueprint and foundational nature) remains entirely tied to its seed. It can never become an oak tree.

Every citizen deserves the protections guaranteed under the contract of citizenship. But you never need to falsify your origin, nor do you ever need to wrongly claim or erase another native identity to be heard.
