Today we've published a new report, highlighting how the North and Midlands can be better-connected by rail, at a reduced cost compared to the original #HS2 proposals for the east of the country.

Our report recognised that HS rail solutions via Newark or Manchester had significant flaws and did not address east's connectivity issues.
The 15m people of the east of the country won't travel west by rail for a north-south journey between neighbouring cities and communities.
“We welcome the publication of the terms of reference for the study into how to bring high-speed rail to Leeds, but we are absolutely clear that this cannot be as a single spur from the west of the Pennines."

Regional mayors and council leaders have united behind the proposals. @JamesLewisLab and @BBradley_Mans have written to govt asking for the report to be incorporated into the IRP's terms of reference.

Jarrow MP @KateOsborneMP asked the Prime Minister during today's #PMQs what plans the government has to invest in the North East.
@BorisJohnson said the region "will be the beneficiary of the biggest investment in #rail infrastructure beyond #HS2" in the last century.
🗣️ "Failure to go ahead with HS2 to Leeds would serve to demonstrate the emptiness of Conservative slogans and promises and relegates the region to second class status."

During #COP26, @HS2ltd is running an environmentally focused ‘virtual pavilion’ and a series of seminars detailing how they are tackling climate change. You can find links to all the events on the #hs2east website: https://t.co/xvLKHbrKdl
This is the map that I'll use to turn into something prettier. It's every railway station of Great Britain. If it's green you can start at Leeds City Station and get a train there faster than driving. If it's red, the car is quicker.
As we look forward to #COP26, find out how #HS2’s #EasternLeg will contribute to a #netzero#carbon#transport network fit for the 21st-century, helping to remove cars and lorries from the roads, and reduce the need for domestic air travel. https://t.co/lpp0X8n0Le
The absence of clarity on the Eastern leg of #HS2 from the #Budget an issue on @bbcquestiontime@bphillipsonMP on the absence of the level of investment we need to see in High Speed Rail.
We'll continue to push for publication of the IRP & full delivery of the Eastern leg
@MayorOfWY asks why #HS2East and #NPR were not in #Budget2021, saying: "Both projects are vital to improving connections between the great cities of the North and Midlands. We’re told they are coming soon, but the watered-down versions that are rumoured are not acceptable."
