A study in 2017 showed that #Maldives accounted for >60% of the net global increase in #atoll land area. North #Male' atoll alone contributed 15.5%, which is comparable to reclamation work in the whole of the #SouthChinaSea.

With proper research and reporting, present day Maldives could become an #expert state: setting up global standards and systematically quantifying the #economic, #environmental, and #social implications for land #reclamation.
