Are we ready to have an open conversation about Agriculture in Nigeria?

If yes, we need to set some premise and parameters in place to help us all understand the issues and possible solutions or practical way forward?

Yes, Agriculture/Environment has one of the highest/largest portfolio of grants, loan and subsidy in Nigeria as at today, but why are farms shutting down, and farmers complaining?

Maybe it’s because of its intervention/implementation process, hear me out…

Designing grant/loan/subsidy is one thing, usually done by pool of academics/professionals that have long association with government MDA’s and good grasp of how iNGO operates, they come together to form a project document or implementation status https://t.co/Eg5q4EHyCv

Afterwards the documents and conversation with the authorities they set up engagement forums to test acceptability and strength within the common folks, media helps to keep the information at fore front and front pages.

But when it’s time to implement these beautiful and wonderful well thought through projects or proposals, there’s a change in status quo, why? Because interest of the relative few supersedes the millions of farmers that sincerely need the intervention, let me give you a recent example, go through Anchor Borrower Scheme program and check the percentage of common farmers in the program, don’t take my word for it, check the dry season farming scheme recently by government and pinpoint the farmers and cooperate entity involved.

But it’s very easy to fixate the blame on Umar who toll his all to farm onion on 3 acres of land in Ikara or Beatrice who put her all into Irish potato in Jos or Ademuyiwa who planted cassava of 5 hectares in Iseyin with very little or nothing to show for it or Emeka that had to use his school fees to run Christmas chicken with no support whatsoever from either government or his immediate family.

If we ever want Nigeria Agriculture to work, we need to take away the impediments and roadblocks we’ve built over the years, we need to make farmers see themselves as worthy of their profession and their impact/impart on the society at large (rural-urban migration at its peak) we need to ensure produce are sold in premium and inputs are genuine and standardized, we need to introduce mechanization and reactivate commodity market system in primary farmers market, we need to create more linkages to take care of post harvest losses and storage facilities with haulage system, food are not expensive at primary farmers markets, cost of logistics to get them to your secondary markets are the issues.

But what do I know, I am just one of the many people that are involved in this venture with little or no knowledge of any other thing than this, maybe you all with vast knowledge can help us solve the issues and help avert the looming food crisis that is becoming obvious daily. Thanks 🙏
