For the first time, we successfully demonstrated 3D printing of structures within live human cells. Our paper was recognized as an Editors' Choice article and featured on the back cover.

Congratulations, @MarusaMur 🎯
We've just published a paper demonstrating 3D printing inside living cells —yes, inside.
We printed custom micro-structures (even a tiny elephant 🐘), and the cells survived and went on to divide. #3DPrinting#CellBiology

Congratulations, Zala! 🪄
After showing that soap and smectic bubbles 🫧 can function as lasers, we’ve now demonstrated their ability to sense pressure changes in air and underwater — and even perform remarkably well as microphones 🎤.

Bon appétit, Jedis.
Scientists have created the first lasers made entirely from edible materials, which could someday help monitor and track the properties of foods and medications with sensors that can be harmlessly swallowed: https://t.co/AVgIzZUkQE @NewsfromScience
Scientists have reimagined the meaning of a "light meal," creating microlasers that use natural products to emit illuminated beams through food. And they're completely edible. These mini lights, the first demonstration of laser emission from an entirely edible system, could be harnessed for everything from environmental sensors to food safety trackers and bio-barcodes.

Matjaž Humar received the Zois Award — Slovenia's highest honor for scientific achievement 🏅 The ceremony took place on Nov 9, 2025, at Cankarjev Dom, with Prime Minister Dr. Robert Golob delivering the keynote. #ZoisovaNagrada@slovenia@vladaRS@cankarjevdom@JSI_SLO
Edible microlasers?? Yes!
Made entirely from vegetarian, food-safe materials, these microlasers can be embedded in food for authentication and real-time monitoring.
We're excited to share our latest research—lasers you can actually eat!

💬 Back at #LUCESCOSTAction: Matjaž Humar shares insights on Funding Opportunities for Young Researchers! Empowering the next generation to push the frontiers of science! 🚀🎓 @COSTprogramme
🔵 Starting the 2nd #LUCESCOSTAction Group Meeting in Zadar with a plenary lecture by P. Matjaž Humar (Jožef Stefan Institute, SI)!
✨ “Soft and biological microlasers for sensing and barcoding”
ERC-funded pioneer at the frontier of biophotonics! 🚀 @COSTprogramme
We are very pleased to have Abdur Anwar from the @HumarLab visit us as part of his research on edible photonic barcodes for food tagging and tracing with @tra_food. During his stay he will be working with Prof Graham Turnbull.
#Ediblelasers, we will develop lasers entirely from edible materials and use them as sensors and barcodes in food, pharmaceuticals, and other products.
📣 Out now! Final results of the 2024 ERC #Proof of #Concept#Grant call for proposals for #funding.
134 researchers will receive €150k each to explore the commercial or societal potential of their frontier #research results.

We gathered to celebrate @ERC_Research#ERCCoG#SoftQuanta and enjoyed a wonderful traditional Christmas lunch at Čad, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates.
Matjaž Humar has received the @ERC_Research#ERCCoG (ERC Consolidator Grant) in the amount of 2.3 million EUR. Within the grant #SoftQuanta, we will develop novel quantum light sources based on soft and biological materials.
