I find that my life improves a lot when I shrink the time horizon. Instead of worrying about long-term goals, I just focus on the next hour. Do one thing that moves me forward. One closed loop. One workout. One hard conversation. One whatever. Thinking about how to build a successful life is daunting. How can you have a successful day? How can you win this hour? Do that. Then do it again. Momentum is a byproduct of movement.
My life changed when I realized discipline was just the highest form of self-respect. It’s choosing what you want most over what you want now. It’s keeping your word. It’s an act of service to your future self.
I’m convinced that you can get pretty far in life by just finishing things. The world is full of half-written books, half-built businesses, and half-kept promises. You stand out by showing up. By closing loops. By doing what you said you’d do. By having the courage to finish.
Underrated life advice: A good life is built by simply doing uncomfortable things sooner. The delayed conversation gets harder. The ignored problem gets bigger. The small repair gets more expensive. Peace is never found through avoidance. It’s found through direct early action.
The easiest way to avoid looking bad is to do nothing, but if you do nothing, you look bad too.
So if you're going to look bad either way, you as well do that thing you want.
you need four hobbies. no more, no less.
create
bring something into existence. write, build, draw, code, cook. creation grounds you. it turns thought into reality.
consume
read books. watch films. study art. this feeds taste and perspective. good input sharpens good output.
cavort
move your body daily. walk, lift, run, dance. motion stabilizes the mind. a stagnant body distorts thinking.
commune
have a community. friends, family, peers. isolation corrodes judgment. shared reality keeps you sane.
miss one, and the system degrades.
keep all four, and life stays balanced, generative, and human.
Kobe Bryant once said:
“Everyone wants to be a beast. Everyone wants to be the best. But very few people are willing to do what it actually takes. Because what it takes is boring. It is waking up at 4:00 AM. It is shooting the same shot a thousand times. It is watching the film when you are tired. People fall in love with the result, but they hate the process. You have to fall in love with the boredom. You have to fall in love with the repetition.
If you can find joy in the mundane work that no one else sees, the lights will eventually shine on you.”
James Dyson on why he actively avoids hiring experienced people:
Most companies look for candidates with years of industry experience. The founder of Dyson does the exact opposite.
"Experience means that you've seen how something's worked in the past or you've seen solutions to problems, but the world is changing so rapidly and we're trying to innovate and pioneer anyway. So actually experience doesn't help us very much and in fact it can get in the way."
Instead of recruiting seasoned professionals, Dyson hires undergraduates and recent high school graduates, and has even built his own universities to train them from the ground up.
When asked how he harnesses inexperience without it becoming a disaster, he pushes back on the assumption that experienced hires are easier to onboard:
"The temptation is always to choose someone who's got experience so you don't have to train them. But actually you do have to train everybody because anyone coming in here is doing something they've never done before."
His point is clear:
If everyone is doing something new regardless of their background, prior experience loses its advantage and can even become a liability by anchoring people to old ways of thinking.
He then explains what makes his young recruits so valuable:
"And the experience with our undergraduates is wonderful. You know they don't do the obvious thing. They don't do what should be done. They start doing something else which is much more interesting."
