🌍 Building Resilient Cities, Strengthening Regional Integration

Sustainable urban development is essential to building resilient communities, managing climate risks, and creating inclusive opportunities for millions across the IGAD region.

IGAD and UN-Habitat have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen regional cooperation on sustainable urbanization, climate resilience, land governance, disaster risk reduction, and integrated territorial development across the Horn and Eastern Africa. The partnership will support Member States through joint programmes, knowledge sharing, capacity development, evidence-based planning, and resource mobilization to address the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate change.

🌍 Strengthening cross-border cooperation for a more peaceful and resilient IGAD region.

This week, #IGAD's Cross-Border Development Facilitation Unit (CBDFU), together with the IGAD Secretariat, specialized institutions, implementing partners, and development stakeholders, convened in Nairobi for a five-day induction programme to strengthen coordination, governance, and the delivery of cross-border initiatives.

The programme enhanced collaboration on conflict prevention, early warning systems, transboundary cooperation, and strategic communication—reinforcing a shared commitment to evidence-based, locally driven solutions that improve the lives of border communities.

🤝 IGAD calls upon Member States, partners, and stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, invest in locally driven cross-border solutions, and scale initiatives that foster resilience, regional integration, and lasting peace across the IGAD region.

ℹ️ ICPAC welcomed the International Rescue Committee (IRC) team from Kenya and the Amman Regional Office, Jordan, for a visit to its Situation and Server Rooms to explore stronger collaboration and coordination.

👉🏾 Discussions focused on multi-hazard monitoring and near-real-time alerts for droughts, floods, extreme rainfall, food insecurity, and desert locusts, as well as strengthening HEA Outcome Analysis, regional coordination within IGAD, integration of vulnerability data into the Incident Management System (IMS), and improving flood trigger decisions and lead times.

👉🏾 The visit strengthens IRC–ICPAC partnership in advancing anticipatory action and disaster risk management across the region.

ℹ️ The recent flooding in Nairobi offers an important lesson for the wider IGAD region. It should not be seen only as a local incident or an urban problem. It should be understood as a warning sign for the region’s rapidly growing cities and the importance of climate risk proof plans. Flooding is never just about rainfall; it is equally about drainage, land use, infrastructure maintenance, settlement patterns, governance, inequality, and preparedness. When these systems are weak, even a timely forecast may not be enough to prevent disaster. The region must recognise this and act on it, ensuring that climate risk is built into city planning before the next disaster strikes.

Reflecting, Learning, Advancing: IDDRSI Participants Chart the Next Phase of Resilience Action

The IDDRSI Reflection Workshop entered its final day with participants making group presentations summarising key outcomes and insights from Day 2 discussions.

The presentations highlighted progress, lessons learned, and forward-looking recommendations to strengthen coordination, innovation, and knowledge sharing under the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI).

Each group’s contribution underscored a shared commitment to advancing IGAD’s drought resilience agenda and shaping the next phase of regional action.

Reflection and Rethinking of the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI)

The IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI) is convening a three-day workshop in Machakos, Kenya, to reflect on and rethink its 12-year journey.

Speaking at the opening, IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary, H.E. @MAWAreSo, noted that:

“We may not have fully solved the drought challenge, but we are undoubtedly in a better position than before. However, this progress does not mean we are in the clear, drought will return, and we must be more prepared than ever.

IGAD’s commitment to tackling drought and building resilience is evident through its Specialised Institutions dedicated to these issues. We have the knowledge, the resources, and both ongoing and completed projects that lay a strong foundation for future action.

This meeting should therefore serve as a dynamic platform for participants to exchange ideas, reflect on lessons from the past, and build on our shared experiences to design more effective plans for the future.”
