From Early Warning to Early Action: Tackling Food Insecurity in the IGAD Region.

More than 40 million people across the #IGAD region are facing high levels of acute food insecurity — affecting families, farmers, pastoralists and children across the region.

Opening the launch of the IGAD Regional Focus of the 2026 Global Report on Food Crises, on behalf of H.E. @DrWorkneh, Deputy Executive Secretary H.E. @MAWareSO called for collective action to strengthen early action, resilient food systems, regional markets and coordination.

IGAD remains committed to turning evidence into action for greater food security and resilience across the region.

IGAD CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE DE-ESCALATION IN NORTHERN ETHIOPIA

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is gravely concerned by the escalation of tensions in northern Ethiopia, including reports of renewed hostilities, the seizure of civilian airports and the disruption of air services.

IGAD calls on the parties to cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that could further imperil civilian lives or undermine the peace process.

On the margins of UNGA in New York, IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh, held discussions with H.E. Soltan bin Saad Al Moraikhi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar.

They exchanged views on regional peace and security and agreed to deepen cooperation between IGAD and Qatar in support of greater stability and shared prosperity across the IGAD region and the Middle East.

Today, in front of the IGAD Executive Secretary, @DrWorkneh, Agriculture Ministers from IGAD Member States signed an endorsement of the IGAD Regional Agro-Food Systems Investment Plan (2026-2035), and the IGAD Regional Seed Policy and Regulatory Framework, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Both endorsements will lay a solid foundation for a common approach to addressing food insecurity in our Region, improve rural livelihoods and contribute to the economic development of IGAD Member States.

The IGAD Secretariat convened the Regional High-Level Forum on El Niño Preparedness for the Horn of Africa today, 17 September 2026, in Addis Ababa,

This important event underscores the importance of coordinated regional action, early warning and anticipatory measures to strengthen resilience across the region.

A clarion call by Member States, development partners and humanitarian actors to review the regional El Niño outlook, identify preparedness gaps and consider the IGAD High-Level Call to Action on El Niño Preparedness.

With IGAD Executive Secretary, @DrWorkneh and Uganda IGAD Head of Mission, @BigirwaJoselyn, we had productive discussions with H.E. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, @HonKyeyune, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Affairs, Republic of Uganda on Peace and Security and Institutional Strengthening of @IGADsecretariat.

Uganda is a founding member of IGAD, and a pillar for Peace and Security in the Region.

On the sidelines of the 74th Extraordinary Meeting of the IGAD Council of Ministers, I congratulated my brother HE Ketema Haile Minuta, recently appointed as the Director for IGAD Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

A man of vast experience in the region, he was previously posted in Mogadishu, Somalia in various capacities, and helped smoothen and deepen the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries.

Kenya and Djibouti share a strong commitment to anchoring peace, maritime stability, and multilateral cooperation through IGAD to fill critical gaps in regional development. Our discussions highlighted the strategic imperative of enhancing regional connectivity, digital infrastructure, and trade corridors to drive sustainable economic growth across the Horn of Africa.
Together, Kenya and Djibouti continue to deepen multilateral alignment, foster African Union institutional reform, and create enduring synergies for our people.
