At #IDOPKE2026, Felistas Ndonye shared the story of an 80-year-old survivor of sexual violence who waited three years for justice. Her experience underscores why older persons need affordable legal representation and sustained support throughout court proceedings.
Healthy ageing does not begin at 60. Childhood, adolescence, reproductive years, menopause and later adulthood all contribute to the health, resilience and functional ability people carry into old age. #IDOPKE2026 Healthy Ageing
Powerful insights from the first panel at the Scientific pre-conference of @IDOP_KE
'Healthy ageing is bigger than healthcare. Older persons need more than medical care; financial security, legal support, transport, housing and social services all influence their ability to live independently.
Kenya needs to prepare now for a rapidly ageing population. The country does not have centuries to develop age-responsive systems; it must strengthen them within the coming decades as the number of older persons grows.'

Dr Daniel Nyamongo draws a distinction: geriatrics focuses on the medical care of older persons, while gerontology looks at the bigger picture of ageing, including its social and economic dimensions.
His message? Healthy ageing cannot be achieved by healthcare alone.

"In the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, we have 35 indicators to be able to track how older persons are doing. @WHO is here to listen. We are here to walk this with you. We will provide global evidence, tools, and frameworks." - Dr Arogo, representing @WHOKenya#IDOPKE2026
"In the 2019 census, we estimated about 2.7 million Kenyans aged above 40 and above, and 60. And I’ll tell you why clustering them as above 60 is a concern. Because the needs of someone who is 60 years old are different from someone who is 19 years old."- Dr Arogo

“There is no discussing older persons without older persons at the table.”- Dr Rita Arogo, representing @WHOKenya, at the IDOP 2026 Scientific Pre-Conference, emphasises that older persons must help shape their care.

The qn before Kenya is no longer whether we will live longer, but whether our medical infrastructure will allow us to live better. Ageing must cease being treated as a medical crisis, and start being supported as a human right- Dr. Tasneem Yamani @SuqoonKe@IDOP_KE#IDOPKE2026

“Older persons run businesses, raise families and pass on knowledge.” Dr Atambo calls upon the media to include their experiences and aspirations. She emphasises that older persons must help shape the conversation about Kenya’s future. #IDOPKE2026

What happens when we live longer, but our services stay the same? Geriatrician Dr Lydia Atambo urges for care that reaches older persons where they live: through local clinics, community health teams and home-care services.

Who supports the person providing care? As families become smaller and children move away, caring for older persons needs broader support: trained caregivers, home-care services, and breaks for family carers. #IDOPKE2026

"To the journalists who shape conversation, when you report on health policy, ask how it serves an eighty-year-old managing three chronic conditions. Look beyond the clinics. Look at the communities." Dr Tasneem Yamani, @SuqoonKe and @HamatHealthcare#IDOPKE2026

Older persons need care that protects their independence, not just treats their illnesses. Dr Tasneem Yamani of @SuqoonKe and @HamatHealthcare calls for care centred on mobility, wellbeing and what matters most to each person. #IDOPKE2026

Why wait for a fall, a stroke or a crisis? Dr Tasneem challenges us to act earlier: check memory, protect mobility and review medicines. Older persons need care that anticipates their needs before an emergency strikes. #IDOPKE2026
