🚩 WHEN THE RECORD SAYS SOMETHING DIFFERENT

In 2014, Byron Donalds applied for a volunteer appointment to the Board of Trustees at what is now Florida SouthWestern State College.

The application asked whether he had ever been “arrested, charged, or indicted.”

The “NO” box was checked.

But Donalds had been arrested twice, in 1997 for marijuana possession, resolved through pretrial diversion, and again in 2000, in a case ending with a no-contest plea.

A later ethics complaint raised similar allegations involving applications to sell securities and serve on a charter school board. That complaint was dismissed as legally insufficient, and Donalds has argued Florida law allowed him to answer “no” because his record had been sealed or expunged.

That legal context matters.

So does the public record.

Now add the other questions surrounding his record:

• 100+ allegedly undisclosed stock trades
• Proxy votes cast while he appeared on Bill Maher
• Roughly 165 missed congressional votes
• Questions surrounding advisers and close political allies
• Millions in taxpayer funding flowing to his wife’s education company while he promotes policy in that sector

Not every allegation is proven. Association is not guilt.

Character isn’t measured by what a politician says on a stage, I t’s measured by what he does when he thinks nobody is looking.

When the words and actions don’t match, believe the actions.
