On February 16, 2007, the University of Illinois retired the former offensive “mascot.” Ever since, students have been longing for a mascot to represent their school, spirit, and unity.

Yesterday, the Kingfisher was passed by the Senate of the Urbana-Champaign Campus, with a landslide majority of 105 to 2. This is the furthest any proposal for a new mascot has come.
