18 counties have been identified requiring priority preparedness and response measures because of their exposure to flooding, landslides, drought, food insecurity, disease outbreaks and other possible El Nino related impacts.
The national risk assessment, prepared by the National Disaster Operations Centre @NDOCKenya, places counties in the Coastal, Lake Basin, Rift Valley and North Eastern regions among the areas facing the highest level of vulnerability.
Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu have also been singled out as high-risk urban centres.
A well-conserved environment is the foundation of all socio-economic development.
Our efforts to combat climate change will not only restore our ecosystems but also strengthen national security by reducing conflicts over resources.
I applaud our village elders and NGAOs across the country for helping to mobilise Kenyans to plant more than 5 million trees today, making this Mazingira Day a success.
We also commend H.E. President @WilliamsRuto for his continued push to grow 15 billion trees, which will empower communities, promote peaceful coexistence, and secure sustainable livelihoods.

Forest conservation and restoration are vital to protecting Kenya's water sources, biodiversity and climate.
Through H.E. President @WilliamsRuto's ambitious target of planting 15 billion trees by 2030, the Government seeks to expand forest cover, restore degraded landscapes and secure a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
As part of the 3rd Mazingira Day celebrations, I presided over a tree-planting exercise at Lambwe Forest in Homa Bay County.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service @OfficialKCGS is currently undertaking pre-deployment and asset-readiness measures, including being strategically positioned in high flood risk areas along Kenya’s 🇰🇪 coastline, lakes, and shared waterways ahead of the peak El Nino rainfall period.
Particular attention is being given to the Tana River Delta and Garsen; the Lamu
Archipelago; and Vanga and Shimoni in Kwale County.
In Mombasa, Tudor and Port Reitz creeks remain priority areas as well as Kilifi Creek and the Sabaki River.
Further inland, heightened preparedness is covering the Lake Victoria Basin,
Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Lake Naivasha and along the Turkwel River and Lake Turkana.
The Service has established a
dedicated Maritime Disaster Response Joint Operations Centre at its Headquarters in Mombasa to provide 24 hour monitoring and maintain operational links with the National Disaster Operations Centre @NDOCKenya.
Can a man who once carried a gun to terrorize his neighbours become a hero by laying it down?
As Elgeyo Marakwet County prepares to co-host Mashujaa Day 2026, just weeks after the @_AfricanUnion’s Africa Amnesty Month promoting the voluntary surrender of illicit firearms, its story invites us to reflect on another kind of heroism, the courage to surrender and renounce violence.
The single most important underlying contributor to banditry and cattle rustling is marginalization and the attendant underdevelopment.
Even though the challenge has largely been contained in the past four years, some regions continue to experience sporadic banditry and cattle rustling.
This morning, I met the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security at Parliament Buildings to discuss the security situation in Samburu, Meru and Isiolo counties.
The government has initiated development projects to address long-standing challenges of roads, water, education, health and communication infrastructure in these counties.
In the meantime, we are intensifying intelligence-led operations to recover stolen animals, mop up illegal firearms and bring perpetrators of the crimes to book.
We are also enhancing security presence through the deployment of NPRs and construction of additional security installations, as well as strengthening peacebuilding initiatives.
