Today, 7 January, as our communities mark Eastern Christmas, we also carry the grief of the #IrobMassacre 5th anniversary. On a day meant for prayer, family, and hope, people were massacred in their homes while celebrating a holiday. We remember every life taken, every family shattered, and every person still missing.

We refuse to let this be reduced to a moment of silence and then forgotten. Remembrance must lead to truth. Truth must lead to justice. We stand with survivors and families in #Irob and across #Tigray, and we renew our commitment to victim-led documentation, memorialisation, and sustained advocacy until accountability is real, not symbolic.

Irob Is Thirsty: A Call for Urgent Action 💔🌍
Irob District in Tigray is facing a severe drought after the failure of seasonal rains. For a community whose livelihoods depend heavily on livestock and limited agriculture, the absence of rain is not simply a lack of water—it is a threat to food, livestock, health, and survival.
This is more than a weather crisis. It is a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention.
We appeal to humanitarian organizations, the Ethiopian and Tigrayan authorities, the Irob community in the diaspora, and people of goodwill around the world to stand with the people of Irob.
Water today can mean survival tomorrow.
We urgently need:
Emergency water supply 💧
Food assistance 🌾
Livestock feed and veterinary support 🐄
Seeds and agricultural assistance 🌱
Support for vulnerable families, children, and elders

The Tigray Education Bureau has accused the Ethiopian government of intensifying attacks against the region’s education system, saying a series of air and #drone_strikes in 2026 has destroyed schools, damaged educational facilities, and injured teachers and their families as Tigray prepares for the upcoming academic year.

The latest drone attacks on schools and teachers add another layer to what education officials in the region have repeatedly described as a struggle to prevent the emergence of a lost generation in Tigray.

The bureau called on international institutions and the wider international community to intervene.

“On behalf of the children of Tigray,” the bureau appealed for the international community “to understand these horrific atrocities being committed against Tigray’s education system, to put a stop to these evil acts, to condemn those responsible, and to hold them accountable.”

Update: #Tigray Education Chief sheds more light on destruction of a primary school in latest #drone strike

Tigray’s education chief Kiros Guesh (PhD) has provided further details on the reported drone strike that destroyed Abraha Weatsbaha Primary School in Kilte-Awlaelo district in the night hours of Thursday.

Kiros said the overnight strike targeted the school, describing it as “yet another attack on educational infrastructure.”

The drone strike marks the latest in a series of attacks reportedly carried out by the federal government against sites across Tigray Regional State. However, the federal government has not publicly commented on any of the reported attacks.

In a post published on his Facebook page late Thursday, Kiros said the facility had recently been expanded with new classrooms built by Plan International Ethiopia for early childhood care and development, with support from the European Union.

The education chief also highlighted the school’s significance to the local community, pointing to a joint delegation visit on 5 March 2025 led by EU Ambassador Sofie From-Emmesberger and involving senior representatives of UNICEF, Plan International, Save the Children and the World Food Program.

Photographs shared by Kiros show the school’s blue-and-white classroom blocks and the delegation visiting the facility.

The images include EU and humanitarian officials, as well as local representatives, gathered at the school during the 2025 visit.

Neither Ethiopia’s federal government nor the federal Ministry of Education had commented on the reported strike as of publication.

Drone Strikes Continue to Target Schools and Educational Infrastructures in #Tigray

August 2026 (Tigray Mass Media Agency)— Another drone strike was carried out by Abiy Ahmed led federal government of Ethiopia that targeted Abraha WeAtsbaha Primary School in Kilte-Awlaelo district of Eastern Tigray on August 27, 2026, according to the head of Tigray Education Bureau, Kiros Guesh (PhD).

On his Facebook post, the head said the targeted school is supported by the European Union in Ethiopia, and it had recently expanded with new classrooms constructed by Plan International Ethiopia for ECCDC. The school’s importance to the local community was witnessed during a joint delegation visit on March 5, 2025, led by EU Ambassador Sofie From-Emmesberger and involving representatives from UNICEF Ethiopia, Plan International, Save the Children International and the World Food Programme.

The reported strike came a day after another drone attack that targeted an educational facility in Seharti district of Southeastern Tigray on August 26, 2026.

The consecutive incidents have raised renewed concerns over the safety of civilians and the protection of schools and other critical infrastructure amid continuing attacks in Tigray.

A secondary school in Saharty Woreda, Tigray, has been hit by a drone strike that destroyed an ICT facility equipped with 35 computers installed this year through the World Bank-supported 3R program, according to Kiros Guesh (PhD), head of the Tigray Education Bureau.

“Drone strikes by Federal Government of Ethiopia hit a secondary school in Tigray at Saharty Woreda, destroying ICT facilities with 35 computers installed this year by the World Bank supported 3R program,” Kiros said.

The latest destruction of a school adds another layer to an education system that the Tigray Education Bureau earlier has warned is already struggling to recover from the devastating consequences of the war.

“Serving 500+ students since 1999 E.C., this vital hub now lies in ruins,” Kiros said.
