One of the foundations of the US reserve currency status is the 1970s Nixon-KSA agreement that the US provides military protection in return for recycling of Petrodollars into the US bond market.

When President Trump says things like that "we don't need Hormuz" or that other countries should protect it, is he not undermining this very pillar of US reserve currency?

And no, putting out the fire you yourself started does not count. If the region is plunged into chaos, and then the US surges military to "fix it," that kind of abrogates the deal as well.

Then again, members of the administration have cited US reserve currency status as a burden... Maybe this is one way to... ease that burden...

Chatting with @ctindale today, he raised the incredibly valid point that a continued blockage in the Strait of Hormuz will not only inflate metals and energy prices, but will also lead to hyperinflation in food… due to no fertiliser.

Qatar: Exports 5.5 to 6.0 million metric tonnes of urea and ammonia annually from QAFCO.

Iran: Exports 5.0 million metric tonnes of urea.

Saudi Arabia: Exports 4.0 to 5.0 million tonnes via SABIC ports

Currently, 18% of global ammonia supply and 33% of global urea is interrupted.
