In 2021, after 6 years of shopping at my local Sainsbury’s and tracking where I parked each time on a spreadsheet, I completed all 211 parking spots the store had to offer. In 2024 I moved to a new town - and guess what I’ve been busy doing since :) A thread 🧵
@PaulCowland_@theintercoolerx How is it on our UK roads, Paul? I've always lusted one since they didn't seem so big and daft compared to an BMW 6 or 8 Series..!
If you own a 1980s Audi quattro, or you know someone who does, please listen to the start of today's new Smith and Sniff. We're appealing for help on behalf of a listener.
@nathantubb@sniffpetrol@joncoupland@eBay_UK Fabulous looking car. I’ll always prefer its original shape with two round headlights. (Which I guess also reminds me of the Princess having two front headlight looks of two round and a square)
Do test routes take in real world old broken surfaces?
I wonder if a bit more comfort was exchanged for being a bit less flat in the corners would even make it fun.
Or am I perhaps getting soft in middle age 🙂
Ian
Hello @StvCr, here’s a thought for the podcast after reading an Autocar piece on the KIA EV GT4: “As with the Golf R, there are hot hatches that are simply more fun to drive” - is there a risk road testers are far too track and not broken uk road surface focused?
I’m currently driving a BMW 128ti, a lovely cockpit, modern hot hatch performance, a bit different. Shame it was never available as a manual but even more of a shame is how incredibly firm it is. Only the best surfaces does the ride not become a distraction.
Neil Sedaka was one of the great songwriters and this is one of the great songs. The Hungry Years. He played it live on my late night Radio One show on the early 90s. Not a dry eye. It just lands in the heart and stays there. He was such a lovely man. I’ll never forget that night and how lucky I was. Just me and him in the studio.

Today on @greatesthitsuk it's the last America's Greatest Hits programme. Paul Gambaccini has been presenting it, on and off, for just over half a century. My latest blog post on this radio long-runner https://t.co/EDTfT1kFq9
Fascinating view of Liverpool and the Overhead Railway in the 1920s. It was the world’s first electric elevated railway, stretching from Dingle to Seaforth Sands right past the Pier Head.
It’s a tragedy we lost the "Dockers' Umbrella" in the 50s.
@SimonBatesUK@LouiseOnAir@JonathanRuffle Not Jonathan himself, but generally back when there were less barriers to go from 'technical' to production. It's now sadly incredibly rare.
@SimonBatesUK@LouiseOnAir Delighted already to read you started off as an SM @JonathanRuffle - I lament not being of the era when SM/TO’s naturally glided into production and other greater things in radio.
@Timoldland@AutoPap@ListerLawrence Which one is more comfortable on our roads 🤣
I’ve always loved the i8’s looks, so its probably by luck that the first M2 manual comp also is from a better BMW styling era.
