I am so proud to introduce the Artemis Act today to stop expedited removal for refugees fleeing religious persecution.

My bill is named after Artemis Ghasemzadeh, a Christian convert from Iran who came to the US seeking asylum because she feared death in her home country. When she arrived, she was deported to Panama by the Trump administration without a credible fear interview or due process.

People like Artemis who are fleeing religious persecution should not be subject to expedited removal. They deserve a chance to plead their case–that's what my bill will guarantee.

Over 100 migrants deported from the US, and who are being held in Panama, have been in limbo at a makeshift camp near the remote Darien jungle. "As of this morning everyone remains in detention incommunicado in the jungle," says @ianmkysel, an attorney for the migrants.

They are expected to be released, but these lawyers argue the migrants are victims of “grave human rights violations.”
