Should You Use 6 Inches Blocks for Your Foundation?

This is one of the most common questions I get from people starting their building projects. The truth is, the right choice depends on several factors:

1. For Bungalows on Flat Land:
Using 6 inches blocks for your foundation is generally okay and cost-effective.

2. For Bungalows on Sloppy Land:
It is advisable to use 9 inches blocks to ensure stability against soil movement and erosion. This is especially important when the foundation block courses go above 7. If it’s lower, proper chaining can also strengthen it.

3. For Storey Buildings (Upstairs):
If you truly care about quality and durability, 9 inches blocks are the standard. Anything less is compromising the safety of your structure.

4. After Foundation Level:
Once you are above the foundation, partition walls can be built with 6 inches, 5 inches, or even 4 inches blocks, depending on whether the wall is load bearing or just a partition.

5. Don’t Forget the Chain Beams:
Whether on flat land or sloppy land, it’s advisable to chain your building (using beams and columns). This distributes the load evenly and transfers the building’s weight properly to the foundation.

The type of block you use at the foundation level is not just about cost, it’s about safety, durability, and long term peace of mind. Building is not something you redo every day, so do it right the first time.
