How Hired Thugs Obstructed My Visit to Benue State

Yesterday, I attended the opening of the national campaign office of an opposition presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde in Abuja. My presence was intended to demonstrate that politics can and should be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility. As Governor of Anambra State, I made it a point during electioneering to welcome visiting opposition members personally, provided they acted within the ambits of the law.

Guided by that same commitment to decency over partisanship, I travelled to Benue this morning, arriving at approximately 9:00 a.m. on a purely humanitarian mission: to visit the grieving families affected by the horrific killings in Yelwata, where over 270 people were massacred.

Regrettably, our convoy was prevented from proceeding to the community by thugs chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.” It was deeply distressing to witness such hostility. I came to Benue not for partisan politics, but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer comfort at a moment of unimaginable sorrow. That a mission intended purely to show solidarity, compassion, and support could be obstructed in this manner is deeply alarming.

At a time when our nation should be united in grief and resolute in preventing further bloodshed, we must reject any action capable of deepening our divisions. The people of Benue - and all Nigerians - deserve to sleep without fear. They deserve to travel without fear. They deserve to cultivate their land without fear. Above all, they deserve a country where the state places the protection of human life far above political expediency.

Although we were unable to reach the community today, our thoughts and prayers remain steadfastly with the victims, their families, and the entire Yelwata community. We shall continue to work until the primary responsibility of government - the safeguarding of every Nigerian life - is restored. Until then, we cannot truly say we have built the nation our people deserve.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) is Public Enemy Number 1 of the United States who has successfully escaped justice.

According to @TheJusticeDept, @FBI, and @DEAHQ, Nigerian President Bola #Tinubu was allegedly part of a criminal organization in the 1980s and 1990s that smuggled heroin from Nigeria into the United States.

We will never know how many innocent Americans died as a result of Nigerian President #Tinubu’s alleged #heroin trafficking. What we do know is that the DOJ under President @JoeBiden fought to keep records concerning President Tinubu’s alleged crimes from being released.

Call your Member of #Congress. Ask Congress to protect American families and children from alleged foreign drug traffickers like #Nigerian President Bola #Tinubu.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) and his associates are, as expected, spreading stories and documents to cloud the matter. For example, the letter below is alleged by President Tinubu’s associate (@renoomokri) to be from the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria (@USinNigeria). If authentic, given the @FBI’s recent admission, it raises questions about whether a U.S. agency provided inaccurate information.

But a close examination raises questions about the letter’s authenticity. It contains glaring spelling and grammatical errors: “czheck” instead of “check,” “maitatins” instead of “maintains,” and “it’s territories” instead of “its territories.” It also states, “The result of the checks were negative,” instead of “The result of the checks was negative,” uses the incomplete phrase “nor information of your department,” and says “contact me direct” instead of “contact me directly.”

Given these errors, we find it very difficult to accept this letter as authentic without independent verification. Dear President #Tinubu and associates: if this document is not authentic, presenting a fabricated document as an official U.S. government communication is a serious matter and may have legal consequences under U.S. law.

This is Dr. Von Batten. When my amazing team told me that there were 399 pages of @FBI and @DEAHQ documents linked to Nigeria's President Tinubu (@OfficialABAT), I thought I had heard wrong. 399 pages is a book. What was President Bola #Tinubu’s connection to the reported heroin-trafficking organization to warrant 399 pages of responsive FBI records?

I want to thank President @realDonaldTrump and the entire administration for being this transparent, unlike the @JoeBiden administration, which refused to even admit that it had files on Tinubu. The #Trump #DOJ has shown that it takes Tinubu’s claims that his life will be in danger seriously and is following the law, while at the same time making it known that the records concerning #Tinubu are tied to a serious drug-trafficking investigation.
