Lionel Messi played what was undoubtedly the greatest World Cup of his career while his father was going through critical health issues. Yet, instead of giving him the respect he deserved, people called him a “FIFA boy” and came up with endless narratives just to undermine everything he had achieved.

Imagine carrying the weight of your family’s pain while delivering one of the greatest performances in football history, only to have people desperately try to take it away from you.

Dad, I still can’t believe that you’ve gone. I don’t fall, or rather, I don’t want to fall. It’s very hard for me to imagine that I’m not going to see you anymore, that we’re not going to talk anymore. I know you were suffering and that it’s for the best, but you left too soon. We still had a lot left to enjoy together.

You asked me so much to play in the last World Cup, and it was in the days just before it started that you got the worst. It was the first time you weren’t going to be at a tournament, but Mom told me that you were going to get better and that you’d be well enough to travel. I told you we were going to reach the final so you could travel.

Every time a match ended I waited for and missed your message. That’s when I realized the situation was really bad. Even so, I didn’t stop thinking about going as far as possible, to buy you time and so you could see a match. We reached the final and you couldn’t be there.

I wanted to win it to bring it to you and show you a new one. I couldn’t; my legs wouldn’t give any more. This time I tried to go against my body, but I couldn’t. I never managed to feel good.

When I arrived you thought we had lost the final on penalties. We couldn’t talk about any of everything that happened. You couldn’t enjoy anything.

We weren’t champions, but you have no idea how much we enjoyed every single match. Once again, you were right: I had to be there and play it.

I’m telling you this because it was the only thing we couldn’t talk about, since you already know everything else. We talked every day and saw each other whenever we could, given my commitments.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

I don’t know what I’m going to do without you, I don’t know how to go on. I only played football and now I have quite a few doubts about whether I’ll keep doing it for much longer.

It was always like that since I was little. You would take me to all the training sessions as soon as you got home from work. For many of them Mum took me because you were working.

Obviously you never missed a single match. How you suffered watching me and how you enjoyed it, even though you never gave me many compliments.

You were dad, friend and representative.

You were always the person you needed to be in every moment and you never got anything wrong. Beyond a few reproaches or arguments, you were always right. In the end it always turned out the way you said.

I’m going to miss you a lot, but you’ll always be present, and especially in the upbringing of my children, because I teach them and raise them the way you both did with me.

This World Cup has shown how Argentinian players are just built different, and it was interesting because, in the press conferences, both managers addressed this.

First, Tuchel talks about the Argentinian value of the ball and how they protect the ball at all costs, how they manage those small spaces, and how they learn this from a young age. He references culture, and this is exactly it. A child playing in a certain environment leads to that. Not every Argentinian child is on the national team, but it raises the ceiling. It creates a certain type of style and a certain type of player.

Then Scaloni also references his culture. He sees them play without fear of losing. It comes from playing in an environment where you are constantly faced with the potential of losing and being able to play with that pressure, right? They don’t fight against it. They play with it. They use it.

And I think this is where youth football coaches should really take note. This does not mean we should copy and paste Argentinian culture into every training environment, because culture cannot just be copied. But the values within that culture can be inculcated in every training environment. The value of the ball. The courage to receive it in small spaces. The ability to protect it under pressure. The confidence to keep playing after a mistake. The willingness to play with the possibility of losing rather than constantly trying to avoid it.

Those values can become part of the environment we create every day. They can be present in the games we design, in what we praise, in what we allow players to struggle with, and in how we respond when they lose the ball. If every mistake leads to the coach stopping the session, giving the answer, or taking the pressure away, then players never learn to play with that pressure. They learn to wait for the coach.

It was cool to see how two managers, at such a big stage, reference culture and the environments that kids play in when they’re young. Because the players we see on the biggest stage were not only created by tactics or coaching information. They were created by environments that taught them what to value, how to relate to the ball, and how to play when there was something to lose.

Bruno Fernandes est un Homme.

Après la déclaration de Cristiano Ronaldo affirmant que le Portugal a remporté l'Euro grâce à lui, le milieu de Manchester United a répondu avec une courte vidéo retraçant le scénario de cette finale. On y voit surtout les arrêts héroïques du gardien portugais ainsi que le but victorieux d'Éder.

Je comprends maintenant, les raisons du malaise qui semble régner au sein de cette sélection : l'arrogance du quintuple Ballon d'Or.

Toujours le même refrain : « Moi, moi, moi… I'm back. »

Pendant ce temps, son idole, Lionel Messi, qui porte lui aussi sa sélection depuis des années, ne s'attribue presque jamais les succès. Ce sont ses coéquipiers, ses entraîneurs et les observateurs qui lui reconnaissent naturellement le mérite de ses performances.
