@ettingermentum The campaign is over and he is in office now. We now get to discuss what he is doing and how his choices during the campaign have led to where we are now. Let’s be realistic about what’s going on.
Across the US, 3 years into a genocide, Friends of the IDF fundraising galas are *still* happening.
Millions of dollars being raised for the army that riddled Hind Rajab with bullets, that sniped children, that tortured doctors, that sicced attack dogs on a Down syndrome boy.
I really do think we need to trap this political moment in amber to keep as constant reminder that everyone who reflexively attacked the people who came out to protest Mamdani were not just motivated by electoral reformist politics but also unvarnished anti-Palestinian racism
I need you to understand how bizarre all of this has been. Newly elected New York City mayors of the past have universally ALWAYS replaced the top police leadership to install their own handpicked choice to better assert their vision. It's usually one of their first moves.
Yet Zohran; this anti-establishment poster boy ushering in a wave of socialist, radical notions and revolutionary politics, is the notable exception to this trend when he retained Jessica Tisch as NYPD Commissioner.
This was the fundamental litmus test to whether he would be successful in truly fending off zionist and establishment co-option efforts/ pressure to assert their status quo in this regard. And for all the good he is doing on empowering New Yorkers economically, he failed in this specific aspect, in a way no one before him has.
Jessica Tisch is a vocal, ardent and uncompromising zionist (see her past speech at the ADL), her continuation into Zohran's administration is genuinely as remarkable as it is unfathomable.
For all the corrupt, crooked politics Eric Adams and his office endorsed; for all the abuses of his authority and wheeling and dealing he did particularly to cater to the mega-rich and powerful zionist class of the city; for all their vitriol and animated hostility towards Zohran and his ideological vision/ base— that he kept on such a fundamental component piece of that interest group in one of the most prominent positions within the city's political architecture— is truly astounding.
Particularly given the authority she wields; the very literal monopoly on violence which has historically been used to assert not just the interests of the corporate elites Zohran claims to be confronting, but especially against agitators and aggressors attempting to break the influence of zionist power over the city and country.
When he knows of her family's vast influence and ties to Israel; her father, James Tisch (chairman of Loews Corporation), previously served on the executive committee of AIPAC. Her prominent billionaire family has a overwhelming track record of funding all forms of zionist lobbying, propaganda and influence in the United States.
Zohran knew there was a disproportionate bias she explicitly holds towards the zionist entity— a favorability she would invariably execute through force. And has been permitted to do so now; as recently seen with the clampdown on hundreds of protestors demonstrating against Netanyahu's presence in the city a few weeks ago.
His decision to keep Tisch is eerily similar to how Obama, who came into office riding a wave of popularity stoked up by his opposition to the (Republican) Bush administration's wars overseas, retained Bush's Defense Secretary Robert Gates when he came into office.
For all his campaigning on *change* and promises to end the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, he persisted with keeping intact one of the most integral parts of that mandate— those wars never ended as a result.
Inheriting a key figure from your fierce political rival? Choosing not to replace them is not customary— to keep any cabinet member from the previous administration. Ever. Which made it so strange at the time. That you claim to be opposed in every metric to that past administration in practice and ideals, yet carry forward with a critical member from it?
It seems to be the exact same phenomenon as Obama here. For all his rousing rhetoric denouncing the zionist lobby and its stranglehold; for all his promises of a cultural change to the contemporary political infrastructure— he has submitted to their demands rather than resisting them.
He has seemingly taken the revolutionary fervor that existed in the city to get him into office and now it's the same old lines.
One thing that we have seen happen time and time again is that predominantly Arab and Muslim students / youth - who are forging their own political identity and activism and thus language in this country - continue to be relegated by supposed sympathizers to Palestinians as “extremists”, “idiots”, “Feds” and “psyops”.
These people are no different, in true principle, from those who led the violent and political repression of student speech and encampments across 2024 and 2025. And they have wasted more of their breath punching down, on those without material power, than even sharing the names of the children Israel killed this past week in Gaza with the bombs they paid for with their tax dollars.
For a lot of people, the only acceptable form and language of activism around Palestine is that which comes from the JVP of their choice or online commentator (either a single chosen Palestinian or any non-Palestinian).
At the core of this, which is what we have not actually dismantled at a discursive level, is the dehumanization & subhumanity of Palestinians (Arabs & Muslims) and the unbreakable sacrosanct humanity of Israelis (Jews, especially white) at the expense of Palestinian life.
Yesterday, an ICE agent opened fire in Marble Hill. They shot a member of our community in the neck while he was in his car. His five-year-old kid was in a child seat in the back of the car when ICE agents fired at least 7 rounds into it. This was in the middle of the afternoon, with children walking home from school and people heading home from work. Federal agents put every one of them in danger.
When I was in Marble Hill last night I saw NYPD officers rapidly escalating violence. As I was trying to de-escalate, I was shoved to the ground by an officer. I witnessed unmarked law enforcement cars hitting protestors as NYPD officers pushed people out of its path. And instead of condemning ICE’s violence, Police Commissioner Tisch attempted to justify the shooting by reading off our neighbor’s past interactions with police.
The NYPD spent more time protecting a militia that just shot someone than protecting New Yorkers. Last night, the NYPD and Commissioner Tisch violated the spirit, if not the letter, of our sanctuary city policies and fueled the Trump Administration’s attempt to demonize our communities. The NYPD’s Strategic Response Group must be disbanded as quickly as possible, and Commissioner Tisch must step down.
In this district, there are mothers who are afraid to send their kids to school, workers who are afraid to show up for their shifts, and people who won’t call for help anymore because they can’t be sure who will come. That’s what it means to have a violent militia operating in your community. You don’t feel safe walking down your own street.
For decades, we’ve been told ICE can be fixed with more oversight, better training, or reform. But you can’t reform an agency whose purpose is to terrorize immigrant families. You can’t train cruelty out of a system built to enact cruelty. ICE must be abolished.
This moment demands that everyone step up. Elected officials at every level need to stop hedging and say it plainly: Abolish ICE now. Our city must enforce every sanctuary protection we have and city officials must ensure this cannot happen again.
@israelispeaceny@bradlander@NYCMayor@JumaaneWilliams Israelis for Peace do a perfect demonstration of how, for Israel, “peace” means “i don’t have to share my space and time with Palestinians.”
This is why you guys demonstrate alone and have no allies.
Same people mad at protesters for calling on Mamdani to do something about the SRG yesterday will today urge those same protesters into the streets to get brutalized by the SRG.
This shit is all one fight.
@alexbkane Truly bizarre framing. Everyone protesting was grieving the genocide in Gaza.
Clearly the Democratic Party in New York is loudly out of touch with the constituency. What a shame.
NYC-YDSA chapters now confirming in a public statement that they faced direct pressure from members of NYC-DSA steering over their endorsement of an October 7th protest critical of Zohran Mamdani, including citing “pro-Hamas dog whistles” referring to Arabic text in the flier.
“Response” is one way of describing what Amnesty Intl, Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders, B’Tselem, OxFam, the International Association of Genocide Scholars all label a genocide but I guess if you use these anodyne handwavey terms it does seem vaguely insensitive, sure
Two federal agents are going door to door near the crime scene “trying to get evidence.” Darializa Avila Chevalier and state Sen. Gustavo Rivera are following them to tell people they don’t have to answer or speak with the agents.
We have moved so far away from normal democracy and into normative fascism that protests are now readily reviled as “just yelling.”
Yet! Yet! Fifteen years ago we slept in Zucotti and now we protest the mayor elected by people effort. These are gains. It’s not foreclosed to us.
Imagine in America in 2026 watching protesters confront an elected official on the street and think that it’s anything other than exactly what should be happening in this country, when every avenue of dissent is being stripped from us.
I’m losing my mind at these arguments.
Is the argument not to protest or criticize Mamdani? Or call for disbanding the SRG?
NO!
The argument is that it is dumb and dishonest and offensive to scream that he is complicit in a genocide at a vigil, and to claim he supports killing kids.
The strawmenners are out in force today.
This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.
This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.
Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.
Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.
Abolish ICE.
After ICE agents shot a man in the Bronx today, a call is circulating for people to mobilize to the hospital where the man was taken.
Per NYPD an hour ago, “The individual who was shot…is currently conscious and receiving medical attention.”
NYC-YDSA says NYC-DSA made YDSA remove their endorsement post of yesterday’s protest, then pressured individuals into removing their own posts (with the YDSA logo removed), and threatened to pull funding.
YDSA has long been activism-oriented, not clout or electorally-focused.
