Static analysis is just a concept. It is illustrated by Formal Verification with e.g. symbolic execution.

Formal Verification: using Formal Methods to verify a piece of Software meets its post conditions under some preconditions.
Static Analysis in my view is not necessarily formal, it is the process of verifying some code.
