My @Nature World View from @MeharryMedical College argues: Nurturing talent at community-rooted institutions is a necessity—not a luxury. 3 lessons: enabling infrastructure • mentorship as “core facility” • aligned governance+partnerships+accountability.https://t.co/z6AVVYxbMo
The next transformation in higher education will not be driven by technology alone. It will be driven by governance. Smart governance aligns mission, people, policy, data, infrastructure, accountability, and culture.

Culture is the real operating system.
It is not an SOP or policy. It is the pattern of signals people observe, trust, and learn to follow.
The future of higher education belongs to institutions that govern with discipline, adapt with purpose, and compound excellence and trust.
1/ The future will not belong to the best predictors. It will belong to the best-prepared institutions.
In a nonlinear world, leadership is no longer the art of certainty. It is the discipline of preparedness.
3/ A few principles matter:
Move from prediction to preparedness.
Protect the commons: infrastructure, data, trust, reputation, talent, and credibility.
Play the infinite game.
Do not confuse more resources with more capacity.
Practice disciplined courage.
This milestone reflects our faculty, trainees, staff scientists, administrators, funding partners, innovation teams, and the vision of Meharry leadership. At Meharry, innovation means discovery with purpose, trust, capacity-building, and better health outcomes for communities.
Meharry Medical College continues to show how mission-driven institutions shape biomedical innovation.
According to the Cure Innovation Index, Meharry ranks #150 among eligible U.S. research universities, among the top 5 in Tennessee, & as a leading HBCU. https://t.co/G28tEqeXGc
I bow with gratitude to mothers & mothering souls everywhere. Mothers carry the sacred capacity of bringing possibilities into form. Through them the world learns patience before power, belonging before achievement & care before control. May we honor them with reverence & action.
The most fulfilling academic life is often built through both intentional choices and unexpected experiences—through scholarship, mentorship, service, and the moments when teaching strengthens the scientist as much as the learner.

I could not agree more with the insight: teaching helps researchers sharpen the clarity, purpose, and impact of their science. When we teach, we are invited to distill complexity, listen more deeply, and communicate discovery in ways that inspire the next generation.
We may not predict the future precisely, but we can prepare for it. Control is often an illusion. Preparation is not.
Leadership is the capacity to remain centered, humane, and strategic when the path becomes most difficult.

In a time of technological acceleration, demographic change, geopolitical realignment, environmental strain, & social tension, institutions face a choice: innovate with purpose or drift toward instability. Pressure, timing, relationships, and human decisions shape the future.
Yesterday, two police officers were Good Samaritans. On way to Michigan, when AAA roadside help was unavailable, they escorted our car with a burst tire in Dayton, Ohio at night to a tire shop & made sure we reached hotel safely. Grateful for their professionalism & compassion.
Addresses from @UN Rector Prof. @tmarwala & @NIH Director @DrJBhattacharya@MeharryMedical College’s sesquicentennial research celebrations point to a future of health grounded in reproducible science, innovation & trust-centered AI-enabled partnerships open to talent everywhere.
We are honored to host Dr. Jayanta Bhattacharya, Director of the @NIH & Acting Director of the @CDCgov, for a distinguished address on the future of biomedical research.
