🚨BREAKING NEWS:
🇨🇩🇷🇼 The Joint Oversight Committee for the Peace Agreement between the DRC and Rwanda has held its first meeting since the historic signing of the agreement on June 27, 2025.
The inaugural session of the Joint Committee tasked with monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda took place on July 31, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
This marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of a lasting solution to the long-standing conflict in eastern Congo.
The agreement was signed on June 27, 2025, under the mediation of the United States of America basing on Qatar's latest efforts.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the U.S., Qatar, Togo (serving as the African Union mediator), and the African Union Commission, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State released on Friday morning.
This initiative aims to tackle a crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 5.6 million people since 1996, according to a 2018 study by the International Rescue Committee.
During the meeting, leadership positions within the oversight committee were filled, with a goal of ensuring the agreement is properly enforced—unlike previous accords that were signed but never implemented.
The committee also adopted terms of reference for future meetings and discussed implementation strategies, including preparations for the first Joint Security Coordination Mechanism session between Rwanda and the DRC.
While the peace agreement stipulates that the DRC must cease cooperation with the terrorist group FDLR—composed largely of perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, which claimed over one million lives—and that Rwanda would in turn remove its defensive measures, there is still no clear indication that the DRC will cut ties with FDLR.
The group was officially designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government in 2017 (https://t.co/hhNfvcyeT3…).
We will continue to closely monitor the implementation of this peace agreement, which is expected to restore trade and cooperation between Rwanda and the DRC.
