Liver Inflammation Linked to Cognitive Decline in Aging

Chronic inflammation in the liver is linked to cognitive decline as we age, with researchers uncovering a potential pathway between liver inflammation and brain health.

Through a process called necroptosis, damaged liver cells release inflammatory molecules that may travel to the brain, triggering inflammation and possibly contributing to cognitive impairment.

By blocking necroptosis, researchers observed reduced inflammation in both the liver and brain in preclinical studies, suggesting a new avenue to mitigate age-related cognitive decline.

The study also points to macrophages and cellular senescence as contributing factors to persistent inflammation, exacerbated by aging and obesity.

This research highlights the interconnected nature of liver and brain health, with potential implications for treating aging-related diseases.

Developing targeted therapies for liver inflammation could help improve brain health and cognitive resilience in older adults.
