Whether you're into virus research without filter (SMITSOMT) or a mix of science, stories, and travel (Culture & Cultures), this episode has something for you.
Tune in, get inspired, and peek behind the scenes of research life at KU!
🎙️ Crossover in the KU Studio! 🎙️
SMITSOMT x Culture & Cultures
This week, two KU podcasts join forces as Jack Abrahamsson & Freja Mikkelsen visit Kirsten Lise Andersen in the KU Studio for a special conversation about life as a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen.
Together, we dive into:
🔬 Daily life in the lab and on campus
🧠 Mental health, exams & early-career pressures
🌍 Culture, community & the international PhD experience
🎧 And… the exciting plans for Culture & Cultures’ new episode series!
PhD students Jack Abrahamsson and Freja Mikkelsen is back with season 2 of Culture & Cultures – a postcast where they talk about science, microbiology and the everyday life as a PhD student at University of Copenhagen!
I am this happy opening a can of Surströmming at #MikroNat@KulturnattenKbh 🦠🧫 Welcome to the FSZ section at Frederiksberg Campus to smell Surströmming, learn about fermented food, antibiotics, hygiene and the microbiome 🦠🧫
Congratulations to Freja Mikkelsen from the @IngmerLab on being awarded the ISSSI ASM Poster Award sponsored by @ASMicrobiology at #ISSSI2024 for her work on single cell RNA sequencing
If you are interested in hearing more about what we have seen and learnt during our trip to Australia, you are very welcome to follow our podcast Culture & Cultures at: https://t.co/U2vKMvx4I2 or https://t.co/IRVJKreQan and our Instagram travel account MicroNomads ✈️
Now, we are really looking forward to a little bit of vacation in Australia 🇦🇺 However, we cannot wait to come back to Denmark to get back into the lab with all the inspiration we have gotten from the conferences @VoM_2024#VoM2024 and #ISSSI2024
Lastly, the city of Perth is beautiful and we really recommend everyone who has the chance to visit 🏙️☀️🌴 Even though we apparently didn’t get to see the city in its best weather, the city has a beautiful coastline, a nice mix of old and modern buildings and overall a cool vibe
We have been really happy to immerse ourselves in staphylococcal research 🔬 There are too many talks we want to highlight, but we especially enjoyed the talks about S. aureus from Dr. Ian Monk and Professor @tstinear from @TheDohertyInst, as well as the phage talk by Professor @Iredell_Lab@PhageAustralia
I got to present some of our research centred around two-component systems in S. aureus in the proffered paper session! It was a pleasure to discuss these regulatory systems with our esteemed colleagues at the conference, and I look forward to going back to the lab and implementing new ideas 🔬
Secondly, big congratulations to Freja Mikkelsen for winning the poster award handed out by @ASMicrobiology and Professor Robin Patel @micro_rp from @MayoClinic 🥳 for her poster with the title ‘Being Single Is Hard - Establishing Bacterial Microfluidic Single Cell Sequencing to Investigate Heteroresistant Staphylococcus aureus’ together with @AmplexaGenetics and @UCPH_Research🥇
First of all, we would like to thank the organising committee for hosting us in the beautiful city of Perth in Western Australia 🇦🇺 🌴 Professor Geoffrey Coombs from @MUniResearch, @ShaxxM8 from @MUniResearch, @FreesLab from @koebenhavns_uni and Anders Rhod Larsen from @SSI_dk
Over the last four days, fellow PhD student Freja Mikkelsen and I have represented @IngmerLab at the 19th International Symposium on Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Infections 2024 (#ISSSI2024) 🦠🧫🔬 In this thread, we wanted to give you some of our highlights from the conference!
Our PhD student @JackAbrahamsson just presented a story about VraT and the relationship between two-component systems and bacteriophage susceptibility at #ISSSI2024
We look forward to sharing this story with more of you soon 🔬🧫🦠
Yesterday afternoon, I presented at #ISSSI2024, which was my first oral presentation at an international conference.
I was really nervous before, but seeing all the supportive people in the audience made it an unforgettable experience! 😊
Now I’m looking forward to hearing a lot of interesting talks about staphylococci during the last day of #ISSSI2024 tomorrow 🦠🧫🔬
I am really happy to this work on #AIPs from Listeria monocytogenes out in its final form.
Congratulations @BejderBenjamin on your first first-author paper!
