You don’t have to look at the diaspora to see support for the LTTE when many Tamils in the homeland show every year how strongly they identify with the movement. The largest Tamil events are often Tamil nationalist events, and the biggest of them is Maaveerar Naal, both in the diaspora and in the homeland. It commemorates the tens of thousands of Tamils who died fighting in what supporters describe as the freedom struggle.

You can’t force a people to fight for almost 30 years, take on two state armies, and maintain a de facto state purely through force. The LTTE was elected by Tamils and several Tamil political parties as the real and authentic representative of the Tamil population.

There is no credible evidence that the LTTE forced pregnant women into violence. That is old Sri Lankan propaganda, much like the claim that the LTTE put bombs into the bellies of pregnant Tamil women. These allegations are unfounded and lack evidence, like many of the other claims made against them.

The only thing correct in your tweet is that Tamils wanted to live peacefully. However, their peace was not destroyed by the Tigers; it was destroyed by the Sri Lankan government through decades of discrimination, ethnic cleansing, and policies that many argue amounted to genocide. These actions led to the emergence of the Tigers in the first place.

The real hypocrisy is supporting a country like Sri Lanka, which targeted and killed journalists regardless of ethnicity. As a journalist, defending such a government is hypocrisy. If you were truly brave, you would speak against those actions instead of defending them.
