Altruism ≠ self-sacrifice. Actions can be self-serving and altruistic.

It's a wide group, some, such as Dickinson, were more influenced by English common‑law, Lockean rights theory, and classical republicanism.

The founders were primarily influenced by the Scottish enlightenment, but Hume's radical skepticism was rejected.
