In Lamwo district Palong sub county, farmers have selected soybeans as their enterprise for the season (March to May), with the agricultural extension worker recommending MAKSOY3N as the highest quality variety.
This was favored for their resistance to pests and diseases, market availability, nutritious and contain various value-added products such as milk, porridge, fried beans, and sauces. Soybeans also suppress weeds, are easy to maintain in the garden, and mature faster than many other crops. Their roots enhance soil fertility by fixing nitrogen and they are easy to harvest, reducing the time spent on this task.
Meanwhile, in Nwoya, one of the groups has opted for hybrid maize - Bazooka, which is known for its faster growth, taste, and resistance to drought and pests, along with a readily available market.
UWONET has engaged an agricultural extension workers in both districts to assist women farmers in selecting suitable enterprises for the upcoming season (March to June 2025).
This support will complement the mentorship by providing hands-on guidance in agronomy practices through all production stages, helping them implement the necessary techniques to improve their yields and transition from subsistence to commercial farming.
This collaboration aims to enhance the farmers' capacity, ensuring they are better equipped to overcome challenges such as @#climatechange and market fluctuations while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Last week, we conducted mentorships of women farmers in Nwoya and Lamwo districts on agribusiness, value addition, and selecting best farming enterprises.
Farmers presented challenges faced, including climate change impacts like prolonged droughts that reduce yields, limited capital for hiring machinery, hence reliance on labor-intensive tools such as hand hoes, fluctuating prices and a lack of quality seeds and fertilizers.

All these efforts are part of establishing a demonstration farm aimed at transferring knowledge on best agronomic practices to other farmers.
The farm will serve as a practical learning space for women farmers, helping them adopt improved post-harvest handling techniques, value addition.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks to enhance food security and increase women's income at the group level, empowering them economically and strengthening their role in agriculture.

‘We honor women who are the backbone of our families, communities, and economies. We are all here today because of a woman who gave life, nurtured us, sacrificed for us, and believed in us. She is the unsung hero and the foundation of society’. Esther Nampijja @Women’s Banquet.
We visited the works of the Megolonyo women farmers' group, it's interesting.
As a group, they have plantations of maize, soya, sweet potatoes, etc. This, according to their C/P, will be sold, and they get money to add in their respective businesses 😉. What a group Mego is?
We work with and through District Women Networks to implement our programs. In Nwoya district, we have worked with Invisble Hope 🇺🇬 close to 5 years.
This approach has enhanced the capacity of CBOs/networks in gender programing and institutional dev't.
I.e. Last year, @NUDIPU 😊 awarded @InvisibleHopeU1 for its valuable contribution towards championing disability inclusion in land rights & inclusive food security practices.
Nwoya district, the fertile place to farm. Despite the challenges, @uwonet has gone far in empowering women groups economically.
Collectively, the 9 groups own farms, look after animals, individual bought land, and started or diversified their businesses 👏 @H3000EastAfrica
