You turn in one of your polycule to the authorities, then Dante has Lucifer slobbering all over you in Niflheim! I want to bath in imperialist blood! they/them
The only way to truly have dignity and integrity as a westerner is to put your energy into opposing the empire under which you live.
Under the individualism of our capitalist society, we are indoctrinated with the belief that the most important and interesting things about us are the personal characteristics which distinguish us from other people: our likes and dislikes, our lifestyle, our interpersonal relationships, our sense of fashion, how successful we are professionally, academically and romantically, etc.
But when you live under the most murderous and tyrannical power structure on the planet, your individual little quirks and facets are a lot less significant than the extent to which you oppose the abuses that your rulers are inflicting upon human beings around the world. If you met a German in 1940, you would probably be a lot less curious about his taste in music and fondness for dapper suits than you would be about his level of support for Adolf Hitler.
That’s you right now. You’re the German in 1940. The most interesting and relevant thing about you is the extent to which you oppose the globe-spanning empire you live under. At this point in history, everything else about you is a very distant second.
I’m sure you’re a nice person. I’m sure you try to be decent to everyone you encounter, and I’m sure you’ve created a really nifty personality for yourself over the course of your life. You probably own some cool stuff and have some fun stories about things you’ve experienced over the years. But as a westerner, none of that matters nearly as much as the degree to which you stand in opposition to the psychopathic dominators who run your society today.
If we lived in Africa, Asia or Latin America, the unique qualities of our individual personalities would have more relevance, because we wouldn’t be materially benefiting from an empire which murders, exploits and steals from the people of the global south. But we are westerners, and the river of blood which feeds our way of life is always the loudest thing in the room.
For us, opposing that river of blood is the only path to a respectable life. We have no control over the fact that right now we live in a society that is fueled by a system of imperialist extraction propped up by the barrel of a gun, but we can control our response to that reality. We can do something every day to throw sand in the gears of the imperial machine. We can help weaken public trust in its propaganda services. We can help open the eyes of our fellow westerners to the reality of what our governments are doing in our name. We can work to foment a revolutionary zeitgeist. We can help construct a robust and widespread anti-war movement.
Your choice to do that or not is the most interesting and significant thing about you as a person. I mean no disrespect to your other wonderful attributes when I say this; that’s just the reality of what it means to be born into this particular slice of spacetime.
I think Mamdani is a good mayor for NYC. He should be an example for how government - especially local government - can be responsive to the people.
Whay he is NOT is a standard bearer for the progressive/leftist movement. Especially on the national stage. He is not working to transform the Democrat party as an institution or challenge the corporate power structure in any way.
His support of Hakeem Jeffries - especially at a moment like this - is just one example. Two things can be true.
If you deliberately kill ONE child, you are a terrible, terrible person and deserve the harshest punishment under the law.
If you deliberately kill thousands, you are a stain on humanity.
As a heterosexual man, you know what I don't understand?
All these heterosexual men who don't actually seem to *like* women. At all. Who seem unable to speak of women collectively without contempt, infantalizing, or scorn.
Women are awesome, individually and collectively.
A lot of foreigners have the misconception that Americans are well off in America. That is further from the truth. A lot of us are living our lives paycheck to paycheck. A lot of us are living life day by day.
Hasbara is so gross because it's just Zionists throwing walls of language at you to convince you you're not seeing what you're seeing.
You see raw video footage of the most horrifying thing imaginable in Gaza, and then you see them in the replies going "This is actually fine and normal because words words words words words words words."
You see a news report about Israel doing something astonishingly evil in Lebanon, and there they are underneath it going "There's actually a lot more to the story because words words words words words words words."
You see some far right Israeli minister spouting nakedly genocidal rhetoric, and they're swarming all over it saying "Well this isn't actually what it looks like because words words words words words words words."
You see every major human rights group on earth saying Israel is guilty of genocide and apartheid, and they're running around frantically telling you it's a giant conspiracy to frame Israel and the truth is that words words words words words words words.
You see more and more mainstream news institutions reporting on the mountains of evidence of widespread rape and torture in Israeli prisons, and they saturate the airwaves claiming it's an antisemitic blood libel because words words words words words words words.
The idea is to just pound your intellect with a firehose of verbiage until your inner sensemaker has been shredded and you're too confused to form a coherent picture of what's actually going on. It's a disgusting, abusive, and profoundly unethical thing to do to people.
But the good news is it's not working anymore. Language is immensely powerful, but its power has its limits. Israel's behavior has become so transparently unacceptable that no amount of word magic can manipulate people into seeing anything other than what's happening in front of their face.
“What will socialism in the United States look like?”
For one, there won’t be any United States, for two, ask the Indigenous, this is their land. They aren’t an interest group that can be bought with empty promises, they are the rightful owners of this land. Black people built this country, and there will be no socialism without us. Whatever happens, folks aren’t settling for another colonizer run mess no matter what it calls itself.
The human species has essentially been transformed into a giant profit-generating machine for corporations.
Under capitalism, humanity exists to serve the interests of the corporation. We are all livestock; beasts of burden used to carry margin expansion forward from quarterly statement to quarterly statement. Enjoyment of life has no value other than the extent to which it can be used to increase the net worth of the shareholders.
That’s why everyone’s so unhappy. We’re not living with purpose. We’re not working together to build a better world and a better future, we’re just pulling levers to turn gears to make the arrow line go up on the graph in the conference room. It’s a hollow, pointless way for people to live.
It makes our whole culture vapid and soulless.
Music is made to be as profitable as possible, which means giving it the broadest possible appeal using formulaic song structure calculated to cause a chemical response in the largest number of human brains.
Movies are designed to draw the largest possible box office revenue at the lowest possible risk to studios and investors, often by just rehashing a movie that’s already proven successful in the past or by slapping together a story about an IP with pre-existing mass appeal.
Food is made to be fast and addictive rather than nourishing.
Healthy human connection has been commodified as social media intertwines with friendships and dating apps insert themselves into the development of romantic relationships.
Human sexuality is being warped and twisted as internet porn normalizes violence and degradation for the maximum number of clicks.
Attention and engagement have been monetized, creating an information ecosystem dominated by conflict and gossip designed to appeal to our baser instincts.
Advertisement is injected into every possible corner of our waking sensory experience, with any available space where the eye might rest or the ear might listen being flooded with psychological manipulation compelling us to consume. They’ll start running commercials in our dreams the instant they have the technology to do so.
You spend eight hours at the office working to generate corporate profits, then you come home and consume products to profit other corporations. You need your beer and snacks to unwind, your streaming services and social media to distract your mind from the stress of it all, your online clothing purchase to try to feel good about yourself, and your prescription drugs to get to sleep at night. People live their entire lives like this.
And that’s those of us who are lucky enough to be living in the global north. In the global south you get wage slavery and exploitation with far more toil, far less relaxation time, and no cheap products made by impoverished workers on other continents with which to comfort yourself.
All of humanity has been roped into this mess. And for what? To make the numbers in some bank accounts increase. To get some green arrows pointing upward on the stock exchange. To enable a few billionaires to buy islands and elections.
All while destroying the biosphere we all depend on for survival.
This, we are told, is the best possible system we could possibly be living under.
I personally do not believe this is true. I personally believe we can have better. Those who benefit from this current arrangement are going to assure us it’s impossible and do everything they can to stop us from changing it, but we do have the means to reclaim the wealth, dignity and happiness that they have stolen from us.
They built this whole machine on our backs. All we need to do is stand up.
Virtually every person Israel have ever killed was murdered with a US or European weapon.
What does that say about the West?
Uncomfortable question and the answer even more so.
The logic of Israel is the logic of every empire:
The victim must disappear for the project to succeed.
But the victim refuses.
And in that refusal, the empire exposes itself as the one that cannot live without killing.
"Never forget," they say.
But they choose what you remember.
Never forget Tiananmen.
Never forget 9/11.
Never forget the Holocaust.
But somehow, you are allowed to forget Fallujah.
You are allowed to forget Mỹ Lai.
You are allowed to forget Sabra and Shatila.
You are encouraged to forget Gaza while it is still happening.
This is not a culture of remembrance.
It is a culture of selective memory.
