Danielle Nemschoff's research shows that prison placement decisions matter. When people are housed closer to home, they receive more family visits, which significantly reduces recidivism. https://t.co/qLgAqaPbBV

I had more fears than I could count before coming to UChicago but they’ve all been unfounded. I’ve met some of the best people here, the dept has been supportive and helpful. The place has changed a lot in the last few years. I would’t let an outdated reputation hold you back.

I'm hiring a predoc!! Please circulate to anyone who might be interested.
I'm particularly keen for predocs to play a role in widening, not narrowing, the pipeline for academia. So even if your background is a bit non traditional, do consider applying!

Short advice thread for budding economists applying now for predocs
TLDR: Being a predoc is a major human capital investment that you and your PI will make together.
Look for someone who will invest in you rather than simply someone who is a big name. cc @econ_ra
By the end of math camp you should know:
1. the basics of constrained optimization,
2. where to look up math concepts you aren’t familiar with, and most importantly,
3. who you’ll make eye contact with when someone says something unhinged in class
One of my favorite health economics papers is Einav, Finkelstein & Cullen 2010. It has a simple price theory model of the harms of adverse selection -- and of advantageous selection!
