These hunting dogs were part of the royal world of one of the most powerful kings of ancient Assyria.

Carved around 645–635 BC, this gypsum relief from Nineveh shows attendants controlling mastiff-type hunting hounds on leashes. Their muscular bodies and distinctive features are captured in impressive detail, giving us a glimpse of the dogs used for hunting by the Assyrian elite more than 2600 years ago.

The relief once decorated Room E of King Ashurbanipal’s North Palace at Nineveh, in what is now Iraq.

The Assyrians filled their palaces with elaborate reliefs depicting royal hunts, ceremonies and court life. Today, this surviving panel is displayed at the British Museum in London.

Victoria belonged to a generation that lived through one of the most difficult periods in modern Assyrian history.

During the **Assyrian Christian Genocide and the upheavals of 1914–1923**, Assyrian communities across **Persia, Anatolia, and Mesopotamia** suffered massacres, persecution, displacement, and famine, particularly during the campaigns and collapse of the **Ottoman Empire**. 🕯️

Violence involving **Ottoman forces and allied or local armed groups** devastated many Assyrian communities and forced thousands of families to abandon their ancestral homes.

These events were among the reasons many Assyrians—including families from the **Urmia region**—fled their homeland and sought safety abroad. 🕊️
