On Friday, 28 February, I accompanied Hon. Ummy Nderiananga, Deputy Minister, Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, and Coordination to Jendele Nursery and Primary School in Zanzibar. The school exists today because the Deputy Minister saw a need, made a request, and the government responded. It is a great example of responsive leadership, made even more significant by the minister’s own lived experience as a person with a disability.

The visit made me think: How do we move from isolated acts of care to a sustained, citizen-driven movement for children with disabilities? Jendele and similar schools represent an emerging model that we have the opportunity to shape from the start. Scaling will require solutions that are co-created, communities that take ownership, and systems that don’t rely solely on a few champions. This is the work we are keen to do at @FCSTZ
