In Nigeria, the easiest and most believable allegation anyone can throw at a public officer is corruption. Once that accusation is thrown into the mix, the water is polluted, the lines are blurred and everyone is kept busy arguing over distractions rather than the real issues.

Matthew Adeniyi understands Nigerian public psychology and he is exploiting it expertly to shield himself. He is an irredeemable con artist who is attempting to drag the name of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, into his criminal enterprise. The Chief of Staff is simply his last straw.

Many commentators have rightly pointed to the systemic failure that allowed such an elaborate fraudulent scheme to flourish. Daredevil criminals who operate around government institutions with the sole aim of pulling off spectacular heists are common across the world. Some succeed, many fail. The part many commentators have overlooked, however, is how that same system eventually detected the fraud and fished him out.

Contrary to the anything-goes narrative being promoted, it was the system itself that raised the red flag and dealt with it administratively.

First, officials of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), the statutory agency responsible for investment promotion, together with officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, identified the anomaly and lodged complaints with the appropriate authorities for clarification. That is a system functioning as it should. It is a system capable of detecting an aberration.

What is not in doubt is that internal collaborators enabled Adeniyi to get this far. That is precisely what investigators from the DSS, the Police and the EFCC must now unravel. The criminal network within the affected institutions must be dismantled and everyone found to have played a role should be arrested and prosecuted.

This was just last week in Montreal, Canada. Nobody claimed Canadians voted wrongly or used the disaster to mock the entire country.
Yes, we should demand accountability from the govt but not every disaster or accident should be politicised.

The Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has ordered the immediate sealing of Solace Estate, located along Chevron Road, for obstructing the free flow of stormwater, an action that contributed to flooding in the Ajiran area.

The enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding drainage channels and ensuring strict compliance with environmental regulations to mitigate flooding across the state.

Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding.

At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety.

I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.
