Today I sat in the council chamber and listened to the daughter of the elderly lady who was fed dog food, by a carer prior to her passing, give a deputation to councillors.

It was horrific

We live in a country where carers are looking after our elderly that can’t read English.

This has to stop. This isnt about anything other than patient care. If you can’t read a food label how can you read care notes, prescriptions, medication etc.

There needs to be a full adult social care reform to ensure anyone providing care to the most vulnerable in our society are able to understand the job.

Now two police officers have been murdered. Call this what it is

SHE PLEADED GUILTY TO A CRIME THAT NEVER HAPPENED TO STAY OUT OF PRISON

Let me tell you about Wendy Buffrey. She ran the @PostOffice branch in Up Hatherley, Cheltenham, from 1998 to 2008. She worked hard and grew the branch salary from 26,000 pounds to 65,000 pounds. Then a computer system called Horizon decided she owed money that never actually went missing.

In 2010 she stood in Gloucester Crown Court and pleaded guilty to false accounting. Her own barrister warned her she had no chance against the Post Office and told her she was facing 5 years in prison if she fought the charge. She barely remembers the hearing. She remembers her son sobbing in the gallery above her.

She sold her business. She sold her home. She repaid 26,256.63 pounds and 1,500 pounds in costs to a company that accused her using a computer that was wrong. She did all this while caring for a sick husband.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission @ccrcupdate did not refer her case until 2020. The Court of Appeal finally quashed her conviction in April 2021. That is 11 years carrying a criminal record for a crime that never happened.

Her father and her son both died before her name was cleared.

She told the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry @PostOffInquiry she could not tell either of them the news.

She also told the inquiry she had considered taking her own life.

Post Office chairman Tim Parker eventually apologised for what he called historical failures.

Historical failures is corporate language for we destroyed your life for over a decade and called it an accounting error.

Wendy said she feels like one of the lucky ones because she is likely to get compensation. Hundreds of other postmasters are still waiting for theirs.

Blame the postmaster. Protect the brand. Apologise once the damage is permanent and half the family is gone. That is how this institution operates.

Janine Powell ran a Post Office branch in Tiverton, Devon. In 2007 @PostOffice bosses accused her of stealing £74,000. Their own courts later found the Post Office knew its Horizon system had bugs from the earliest days of its operation. They prosecuted her anyway.

Post Office lawyers offered her a deal, plead guilty to false accounting and they would drop the theft charge.

She said no, she wasn't pleading guilty to something she hadn't done.

So they took her to trial in Exeter in 2008 and got their conviction. The judge gave her 18 months. She walked into prison two days after her daughter's 10th birthday.

She served five months behind bars, then three more wearing an electronic tag. She left three children behind, aged 10 to 18, in the care of friends because their mother was in a cell instead of at home.

She came out with a criminal record that made her unemployable, a hometown she felt too ashamed to walk through, and depression that pushed her toward suicide.

This was never a rogue glitch nobody noticed. The Court of Appeal later ruled the Post Office "consistently asserted that Horizon was robust and reliable" and "steamrolled over" any subpostmaster who challenged it, calling the prosecutions an affront to the conscience of the court.

Post Office lawyers hid evidence of Horizon's faults from courts, prosecutors and defence teams, to protect the organisation at all costs.

Powell's conviction was quashed in 2022, one of hundreds overturned in what is now Britain's widest miscarriage of justice.

More than 700 sub-postmasters were prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 by an organisation that knew its own evidence was rotten and used it anyway.

Janine Powell has given evidence to the ongoing public inquiry. More than 45 people connected to the scandal are now under criminal investigation.

Still, nobody who signed off on her prosecution has spent a night in the cell they sent her to.

PC Andrew Harper was dragged to his death at 42mph. His uniform was torn off and his injuries were so bad that first responders thought he was a deer carcass.

The men who killed him showed zero remorse they even laughed in court. They got just 13 years each for manslaughter.

Now, under Labour’s new early release scheme, two of them could walk free after only 6.5 years.

This is a total insult to PC Harper, his family, and every police officer. Killing a cop and showing no regret should mean real time behind bars — not a slap on the wrist because prisons are full.

How can any government release such evil monsters back onto this country’s streets especially after they have shown no remorse or empathy of their atrocious crimes.
