@kim_hohman @MiriamForster True stuff. People in general are much more reliant on the kindness of strangers and impersonal systems for what's necessary to life but not guaranteed - housing, education, policing, healthcare...not immaterial. They're major determinants of quality & length of life.

The civil war followed a N/S split largely because federal policies had tried to isolate slavery in the South. With today's issues? There isn't really a geographical split. @Chican3ry The objectifying process you refer to, discoursing on folks without their involvement, was likely what allowed them to get swung so easily. It meant that when folks came in with more hateful messages, they didn't have to raise anything that elicited a "Hmm" bc It had BEEN raised.

It's been studied by looking at data from actual cases, and guns performed worse on the ground than weapon categories like "Knife" and "Misc. Blunt Object." You might legit do better with a vase.

@christapeterso The question is what's more plausible: an AI developing emotions, or an AI designed to make convincing human conversation learning to say it has emotions to optimize how convincing it is. If they're using human feedback at all, expressing emotion would score higher than not.

I would just seriously question the idea that trans & drag culture need to be distinguishable from each other to onlookers. 1. Drag wound up as a thing done in the relative privacy of gay clubs, because it was dangerous to do it in public - exactly what these laws would return us to.

People used the same justification for racial segregation in sports, and it was impossible to prove them wrong without integrating.

@Elfbeee Ads will also pop up if you've viewed stuff critical of them. I'm not sure if that's just a horrible emergent property of Adsense or an intentional tactic, but I've observed the same thing. The content only really has to be *about* a topic for ad targeting to scope it.

@you_jo_girl @CaelanConrad They're only critical of the narrowly defined idea of "gender" they made up to 1:1 correspond to trans people. Less "gender critical" more "sex realist." But ofc if they led with what they're uncritically in favor of, they'd look openly regressive even at first glance.

Iirc, cops can and have been fired for misdeeds that wouldn't necessarily allow a civilian to sue for damages.

@wyndovelh @equalityAlec Which is kind of a weird connection because cops having more money &or power doesn't actually stop that kind of violence. People totally do make association, it's just not empirically validated. If harsher policing worked for mass shootings, America would have way fewer of them.
