@TallowFan @mattforney It is a bizarre mistake. It might have actually been a ploy to get some extra time to think about the position since the IM was low on time. That would be incredibly poor sportsmanship but not necessarily a huge deal in a classical time control with increment

@mattforney Giving extra time to the kid after the illegal move is just standard procedure according to the FIDE rules. The arbiter didn't "realize something fishy was going on" and declare some special penalty for "cheating".

@mattforney IM, not GM. This was not an attempt to cheat, both players are far too strong for that to make sense (the kid was rated >2000, expert level).
This was a competitive tournament, not a fun exhibition
Thavandiran immediately saw the mistake and paused the clock to summon the arbiter
