Really enjoy this Star Wars promotional commercial from 2008 where a Tusken Raider literally just puts a bunch of sand in a folder at work and calls it a day.
A customer at the library asked me a question I wasn't prepared for.
Customer: Excuse me.
Customer: Why does this machine require flesh?
Me: ...what?
Customer: This machine.
Customer: I am touching it, but it does not work.
Customer: Is because... flesh?
At this point I was trying very hard to figure out whether I had accidentally wandered into a horror movie.
Then she held up her hands.
She was wearing gloves.
Me: Oh!
Me: The touchscreen.
Me: Right.
Me: Yeah, it probably can't detect your fingers through the gloves.
Customer: Ah.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: Sorry to bother.
Me: No, no.
Me: That's the best thing I've heard all week.
She laughed.
The machine worked.
And I thought that was the end of it.
It was not.
Now whenever one of our library computers stops working, someone inevitably says:
Staff: It requires flesh.
Staff: The machine must be fed.
Another staff member: Who's volunteering?
So thanks to one perfectly innocent question, our library now sounds like a cult every time the self-checkout freezes.
🏳️🌈 Happy Pride Month, Texas.
Pride is in June for a reason. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York, the same kind of raid that had humiliated and arrested LGBTQ people for decades. Simply being gay was a crime in most of the country back then. But this time the people inside refused to scatter, and they held their ground for nights. One year later they marched, and that first march became what we now call Pride.
Strip away the politics and that fight was about one simple idea: what consenting adults do in their own lives is none of the government's business. That happens to be an idea Libertarians have championed from the very beginning. We were making the case for marriage equality back when it was politically radioactive, while both major parties stayed opposed for years; as recently as the 2008 election, the major-party presidential tickets still wouldn't back it. And we hold that standard consistently: the same logic that protects your church, your guns, and your business also protects your right to live and love as you choose. Freedom isn't freedom if it only applies to the people the government happens to approve of.
We don't believe your rights come from a government, a politician, or a permission slip. They're yours. All of them. So this month we celebrate the people who stood up to a government that wouldn't leave them alone, and we keep standing for the same principle today.
Live free, Texas. 🤠
SpaceX has joined three other industry groups in calling on the FCC to adopt a nationwide policy to automatically unlock phones tied to a carrier’s network 180 days after activation.
“Automatic mobile device unlocking is essential to protecting consumer choice, promoting competition, and lowering costs in the mobile marketplace. We urge the FCC to prioritize the needs of consumers and their families over large corporations’ abilities to thwart competition,” SpaceX says.
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
NASA’s next chapter will be written by talented people willing to take on hard problems and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Excited to welcome our newest class of interns. Among this group are future engineers, scientists, leaders, and explorers who will help shape lunar exploration, scientific discovery, aviation, and the journey to Mars.
Welcome to NASA.
The next chapter of lunar exploration is closer than many realize.
Later this year, we’ll begin robotic landings near the Moon’s South Pole, laying the foundation for a sustained human presence on the Moon.
Tune in for our @NASAMoonBase update this afternoon.
Here is an example of a fake AI-generated image that not only presents a fake representation of the site of the former camp (the gates of Auschwitz I & Auschwitz II-Birkenau together), but also a fake portrait of a well-known Survivor, Eva Moses Kor. Sadly, Facebook allows such a form of disinformation.
By failing to respond to the spread of fake, AI-generated images and videos of Auschwitz and other Holocaust-related sites, social platforms are contributing to the spread of historical distortion.
We believe platforms should take responsibility by actively moderating such content, and, if not stopping it, clearly flagging fabricated images and videos. Memory and historical truth deserve stronger protection. This matters because such content does not merely falsify history.
SUCH AI-FAKE CONTENT ACTIVELY HARASSES THE MEMORY OF VICTIMS.
Today, when users search for “Auschwitz” on Facebook, an increasing number of results consist of fabricated, AI-generated videos rather than authentic historical documentation.
By allowing these distortions to surface, circulate, and gain visibility, Meta directly contributes to the erosion of factual understanding of the complex history of Auschwitz, which we try to protect.
Rest in peace to Tom Kane, who voiced Yoda and Admiral Yularen in The Clone Wars, as well as the narrator, and helped make the show a special childhood favorite ❤️
