Dear Rahul Gandhi,

In a world that has become increasingly polarised, dignified politics had long been forgotten. Abuse has been normalized. Not being able to play the apparently shrewd politics is considered to be a cardinal sin. All that matters is an electoral victory and one is expected to stoop to the lowest of lows if that promises electoral success.

But I was taught, you should be able to disagree without wishing harm on others. I was taught political disagreements shouldn't come at the expense of personal hatred. By the time you took the helm, the politics I was taught was already outdated, that's when I saw a man who was unwilling to succumb, whose relentless pursuit to indulge only in politics of dignity even at the expense of electoral success, you were a beacon of hope in a world that had otherwise become volatile.

And that's why every defeat of yours was personal. Every mockery of you was a mockery of the politics of love. Every electoral defeat was an endorsement of abusive politics. Yet you stood firm, you resisted the idea of hitting below the belt.

But I'm sure you know when you're true to the cause and the cause is just, the justice will eventually be served. When that happens those who looked down on you will embrace you. In the world of justice, crucifixion should always be followed by resurrection and I'm glad to see you being resurrected by the love from citizens at the farthest of margins, for whom you were willing to take all the abuse.

They say you reap what you sow, you sowed the politics of love in a soil of hatred, with nothing but pure conviction that seeds of love could still take root even in a land that has lost its fertility.

Today you're reaping the seeds of love you sowed in the land that had lost its fertility.

18 नवंबर 1999 की सुबह और राष्ट्रपति भवन का गलियारा। देश के तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति के.आर. नारायणन ऑस्ट्रिया की अपनी यात्रा से लौटे ही थे। उस सुबह उनके पास एक ऐसा मेहमान आया, जिसकी कल्पना शायद उन्होंने नहीं की थी।

वह कोई और नहीं, बल्कि भारत के दिवंगत प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी जी की पत्नी, सोनिया गांधी जी थीं। उनके चेहरे पर एक अजीब सा गंभीर सन्नाटा और दिल में एक भारीपन था। सोनिया गांधी जी वहां किसी राजनीतिक चर्चा के लिए नहीं, बल्कि एक असाधारण मकसद से आई थीं। उनका मकसद सुनकर राष्ट्रपति भी स्तब्ध रह गए। वे अपने ही पति के हत्यारों के लिए दया याचिका लेकर पहुँची थीं।

"उन सबको फांसी मत दीजिए..."

सोनिया गांधी जी ने राष्ट्रपति के सामने गुहार लगाई कि राजीव गांधी जी के चारों हत्यारों को फांसी की सज़ा न दी जाए। उन्होंने विशेष तौर पर नलिनी के लिए मृत्युदंड न देने का अनुरोध किया। उनका तर्क था कि नलिनी खुद एक मां है, और एक बच्चे को अनाथ होने के दर्द से नहीं गुजरना चाहिए। किसी अन्य बच्चे की जिंदगी में अकेलेपन का अंधेरा नहीं उतरना चाहिए। ये एक मां की पुकार थी जिसके दोनों बच्चों के पिता इस दुनिया से जा चुके थे।

वक्त आगे बढ़ा। साल आया 2008, जेल की सलाखों के पीछे एक ऐसी मुलाकात हुई, जिसने सबको चौंका दिया। राजीव गांधी जी की बेटी, प्रियंका गांधी, अपने पिता की हत्यारी नलिनी से मिलने जेल के अंदर गईं।

बताया जाता है कि दोनों लगभग आधे घंटे तक आमने-सामने बैठीं। दोनों की आंखों में आंसू थे, वे रोईं, और एक-दूसरे को Gifts भी दिए। एक तरफ पिता की हत्या का नासूर था, तो दूसरी तरफ मानवीय क्षमा का ऐसा अध्याय जो इतिहास में शायद ही कभी मिलता हो।

और फिर वह दिन भी आया जिसकी सुगबुगाहट बरसों से थी। साल 2022 में, राजीव गांधी जी के सभी हत्यारे कानूनी प्रक्रियाओं के बाद जेल से रिहा होकर बाहर आ गए।

ये सब इसलिए संभव हो सका क्योंकि सोनिया गांधी जी और उनके दोनों बच्चों, राहुल और प्रियंका, ने न्याय के कटघरे से ऊपर उठकर माफ़ी का रास्ता चुना था। एक परिवार, जिसने अपने घर का मुखिया खो दिया था, उसी परिवार ने हत्यारों को जीवनदान देने की इबारत लिखी।

जावेद अख़्तर साहब को सुनिये:

1905 की महासभा, 1925 की RSS और 1906 की मुस्लिम लीग को ही देख लें, मुस्लिम लीग गाँधी से नफ़रत करती थी और RSS तथा महासभा भी गाँधी से नफ़रत करते थे. हिंदुस्तान की आज़ादी की लड़ाई से RSS- हिंदू महासभा, मुस्लिम लीग का कोई संबंध नहीं था. यानि ये बड़े हमख़याल लोग थे और इनकी विचारधारा तक़रीबन एक ही थी.

Quit India Movement के समय मुस्लिम लीग ने अपने सदस्यों को इससे दूर रहने को कहा और यही बात गोलवलकर ने RSS के लोगों से कही. दोनों अंग्रेज़ों के सहयोगी थे.

जिन्ना और सावरकर के उदाहरण से यह बात और साफ़ होती है. जिन्ना, जो कभी खिलाफ़त आंदोलन और धार्मिक राजनीति के ख़िलाफ़ थे, 7 बरस बाद उसी राजनीति के सबसे बड़े चेहरों में शामिल हो गए. अंडमान में बंद सावरकर लगातार Mercy Petitions करते रहे और रिहा होने के बाद ‘हिंदुत्व’ का राजनीतिक विचार सामने रखा.

यानि जो लोग स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन से अलग थे, वे बाद में एक दूसरे रूप में सामने आए.

सबसे गहरी बात यह है कि अंग्रेज़ों की मदद करने वालों को अपनी वफ़ादारी का इनाम चाहिए था. जिन्ना को पाकिस्तान मिल गया, लेकिन इन्हें कुछ नहीं मिला. गाँधी और नेहरू ने इन्हें कुछ लेने नहीं दिया. शायद यही गुस्सा इनके भीतर आज तक ज़िंदा है!

धर्मनिरपेक्ष लोगों को “मैकाले के बेटे” कहने वालों पर जावेद साहब कहते हैं कि मैकाले का बेटा तो वह होगा जो Two-Nation Theory में विश्वास करे, जो माने कि हिंदू और मुसलमान 2 अलग-अलग राष्ट्र हैं. अगर यही विचार मुस्लिम लीग और पाकिस्तान का भी है, तो फिर अंतर क्या है?

हिंदुस्तानी समाज की एक और गहरी सच्चाई की ओर इशारा करते हुए वे कहते हैं कि कोई डॉक्टर हो, इंजीनियर हो, जज हो या आर्मी ऑफिसर, अपनी 8-10 पीढ़ियाँ पीछे जाकर देखिए, किसान ही मिलेगा. हम सब किसान की औलाद हैं. किसान एक्सट्रीमिस्ट नहीं होता.

शरीफ़ आदमी कभी-कभी अपनी शराफ़त से बोर होकर थोड़ी देर के लिए बहक सकता है, लेकिन फिर वापस आ जाता है.

(और इसलिये भारत का लोकतंत्र अब ख़ुद को दोबारा पाने की हिलोरें ले रहा है.)
