@jayisawitch@pepie_21 It's moreso that they actually DID something with him. Not everyone cared for it, but it was something unique, and he actually had agency and wasn't just someone's pawn, unlike AJ.
@ThronForce The next trial is considered to be the game's peak (after which, it starts to fall into the usual Layton plot trappings, but to an even worse degree, imo).
It's a decent game, but as a fan of both franchises, it doesn't do either of them (or their main duo) spectacularly.
@Julian_Jojoo@MessmerFan@ThronForce I love how Dual Destinies is frequently described as being too on-the-nose and lacking subtlety, but the one time it doesn't overly-explain to the player the idea of an incident being the straw that broke the camel's back, it's confusing and doesn't make sense.
@Scratch_Point_Z It simply released far too late into the GBA's lifespan. Same as with Rhythm Tengoku (the last 1st party Nintendo game for the system), they just moved on to the new system rather than spend time localizing niche GBA titles in mid-2006.
@AA_Facts2@voltaicpuzzle Honestly, I'd prefer a story to be a little heavy-handed at times, like DD, rather than going past subtlety and just becoming "not communicating certain crucial things properly", like AJ tends to fall into the trap of doing.
@pepie_21 Fuck no, lol. He's confusing and outright contradictory unless you headcanon him as being incredibly stupid, or openly spiteful to everyone (including his own daughter).
The game simply doesn't know how to present him, and it ends up just being a confused mess of a character.
@TextopOnDaTwitr@pepie_21 That's true, but it's a bit of an Acro situation in that the game frames Zak as being """flawed""" but well-meaning, when no, he's just kind of awful (and a little contradictory, at that). So it feels much worse, since you're at least MEANT to hate the others, unconditionally.
@TextopOnDaTwitr@pepie_21 He's still an awful person, even outside of his interactions with Trucy. Physically abusive towards friends/acquaintances (Brushel and Ogla), tries removing Trucy's only means of support before she has a chance to gain the magician's rights out of spite, etc.
@femquilI But such conversations don't last, specifically because they aren't intimately familiar with the characters, plots, etc. So it's a weird case of some people essentially wasting time attempting to debate future games to feel involved instead of actually playing them.
@BillsandBach@iktxmi Because they took elements of a prior case (Turnabout Big Top), redid it, but improved it to the point of actually making it good and communicating its message and themes in a way that isn't confusing or contradictory, like with 2-3. It's a good idea for Ace Attorney DLC.
@frelance_queen@pepie_21 They clarified all the details they got wrong weren't intended. That isn't the joke, they just grabbed a few recognizable main characters, a sexy clown girl from one of the games, and make a skit around them.
@xnavsy So images/cutscenes from the game itself don't count but art used for the front cover of a re-release not even specifically focusing on DD does?
