Bittensor is incorrectly valued, it is not an AI coin.

Bittensor has been one of the most innovative networks coming out of this cycle, many treat it as THE AI coin of the cycle, which I agree with, however, in this post, we'll cover why I think $TAO is so much more than just an AI coin, rather it is the L1 + AI coin of the cycle.

Why an AI valuation isn't enough for $TAO?
Just like L1 chains having dApps, Bittensor is a network of currently 45 dApps called 'subnets', with dozens more building away in testnet. These can offer value the same way that dApps on L1s do and with the coming upgrades including dynamic $TAO, the landscape for the bittensor network becomes very similar to that of L1 chains today.

Comparing Bittensor to L1 chains today
I thought it would be interesting to look at L1 chains today and see where $TAO would fit within them all, purely looking at their current valuations today.

$TAO today sits at around a $3.8b MC, yes FDV is higher but this is inflation that'll come over many cycles. For me it's better to take a 1 year look into the future with inflation which takes us to around $4.9b MC if price remains the same and we're in October 2025. Interestingly, this would take us very close to the $TAO halving too.
I think $TAO should sit below Solana but above almost all of the rest given its strong ecosystem, value proposition, narrative and importantly attention flow. But come on Waj, you have to justify this. What is even on Bittensor thats worth so much compared to these other ecosystem?

The Bittensor Ecosystem
The current plan is to expand to 64 subnets and I think in due time, this will increase to 128. Competition is intense to register a subnet and therefore over time, we're seeing more and more innovation on subnet designs. Due to the limited slots, subnets need to remain attractive and competitive. If you decide to build a subnet and it doesn't offer value, it will eventually be replaced by another. I think for this reason alone, the quality of subnets compared to dApps on L1 chains today is superior.
The current subnet landscape covers sectors including: Inference, data, AI modelling development, compute, analysis, generative AI, Agents, speculation, DeFi, trading, gambling, healthcare and tooling.

To me, this contains all the elements of a base layer network.

Here are just some of the my favourite subnets on Bittensor:

Subnet 10 - AI Yield
Many of you DeFi chads will already be familiar with Sturdy but for those who aren’t, @SturdyFinance is a multi chain modular money market that offer AI optimised yields for various assets. Sturdy have aggregators built on top of the base isolated layer that users can deposit to in order to earn yield on their assets. With the sturdy subnet, miners compete to develop the best AI asset allocation algorithms. As a DeFi maxi, this is one of the best things I've seen come to Bittensor.

Subnet 25 - Protein Folding
As a medic, one of the innovative subnets by @MacrocosmosAI with Alpha fold enable researchers to submit AI models for protein folding structures to help us potentially find new protein structures that can bring new medical treatments and cures to diseases which we haven’t yet discovered. I wrote about this in a little more detail here -

Subnet 8 - Proprietary trading
@taoshiio brings AI to trading, giving miners the opportunity to compete against one another for predictions on the direction of future charts, including BTC/USD, forex and stock market indices who are then rewarded for this. The idea is to then have access to these quant institution grade signals to use for your trading strategies, with an easy stripe/paypal integration for payments. An automated trading infra can then be built and plugged into major CEXes too.

Subnet 19 - Inference
This is a subnet that rewards miners for fast inference of large machine learning models. The front end product offers chat and image which can take inputs and return you with outputs. Miners have been improving their ability to return these outputs making the experience of using these LLMs even better. In fact, I even made the image for this tweet using SN19.

Subnet 39 - Edge Maxing
Optimised mobile AI products with stable diffusion with consumer apps like Womb and Dream. These apps have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and have been top apps on app stores in 100+ countries already.

Why will Bittensor be treated like an L1?
Dynamic TAO is an upgrade coming to the bittensor network which will massively change the way subnets and TAO work together.
There are 3 main elements that interest me:
1. Users will be able to delegate their TAO to specific subnets they want to support. The subnets with the largest stake will earn more in $TAO incentives.
2. Every subnet will now have a token - this is a closed token model that will be paired with TAO in these Uni V2 inspired pools. Users will be able to earn these tokens through $TAO staking.
3. Users can speculate on individual subnet tokens. Want to long data, compute, health care or specific inference apps 'subnets' on Bittensor. Now you can.

We're going to see an ecosystem of AI applications, within a variety of sub domains offering tokens users can get exposure to. These are native, innovative applications and all will be powered by Bittensor.

This is why I think Bittensor should be valued like an L1, not just as an AI coin.
