The @WHO is urging countries to integrate the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of #respiratory diseases into primary healthcare to help patients get timely and appropriate care.
The call was made at a global meeting on integrated lung 🫁 health in Nairobi, Kenya, where health advocates were challenged to turn the world’s first #lung health resolution into practical action across Africa.
WHO @DrTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Director-General’s Special Envoy for Chronic Respiratory Diseases Jose Luis Castro, said healthcare workers must look beyond tuberculosis when patients present with persistent coughing or difficulty breathing, noting that conditions such as #asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease #COPD also require attention.
The push follows the adoption of World Health Assembly Resolution WHA78.5 in May 2025, which promotes an integrated approach to lung health through primary healthcare and referral services.
The resolution seeks to connect efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat both communicable and non-communicable respiratory diseases, building on progress in tuberculosis control and #tobacco prevention while addressing gaps in the management of chronic lung conditions.
@JLCastroGarcia stressed that protecting lung health must extend beyond hospitals and clinics to the environments in which people live and work.
Reducing exposure to household #airpollution, protecting workers from harmful dust and improving access to affordable inhalers for people living with asthma are among the measures needed to prevent avoidable illness and deaths.
He also called for stronger collaboration among the #health, environment, energy, labour, education and finance sectors, alongside greater involvement of clinicians, researchers and people living with lung diseases.

People with lived experience are asked to share their stories but are often excluded from policy decisions.
Meaningful engagement extends beyond simply being heard.
This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we call on all decision makers and leaders to move from listening to action – and build mental health systems with people who live with mental health conditions, not merely for them.

Last Friday, the 2nd of October, the first media reports emerged of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute in the Russian Federation.
The lab worker died after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Initial media reports suggested pneumonic plague following an accidental lab exposure.
@WHO is aware that the Russian government held a meeting on the 2nd of October because they suspected a resident of the Irkutsk oblast had contracted a dangerous infection.
On Saturday, WHO asked the Russian Federation for more information, in accordance with the International Health Regulations.
On Tuesday, the Russian Federation responded, saying that no case of plague had recently been reported in the Irkutsk oblast, and that they had placed about 200 contacts in quarantine.
However, WHO has requested further information on the laboratory tests conducted on the individual who died and the contacts, more detail on what prompted the public health measures, and details about the health status of the contacts.
We have also sought verification of media reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause.
WHO has offered technical support related to plague and lab biosafety and biosecurity.
As we don’t yet have the full picture of this event, we are not able to conduct a full risk assessment.
Timely, complete and transparent information sharing under the International Health Regulations is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable an accurate assessment of potential public health risks.
