Brief comments on the nor’easter potential this weekend.

As mentioned this morning, models are more bullish on an ocean storm this weekend but there is still significant uncertainty on the track and the strength of this system.

Any storm that forms will be much different than what we just experienced. This would be a more typical nor’easter where you have a strengthening storm system moving up the coast. When they rapidly strengthen 24mb or greater in a 24 hour period that’s called bombogenesis. That’s on the table with this system.

These system have the potential to be more damaging with heavy precipitation, strong winds and coastal flooding. With the cold air in place this would be heavy snow…add in wind and this could produce blizzard conditions….add in the full moon and high astronomical tides and this could be a damaging system for the shoreline. Not to mention we are running out of places to put the snow.

This disturbance begins in the Gulf later this week and tracks across Florida into the Atlantic and then starts up the coast, likely to a position somewhere off the Carolina coast. From that point, there are three scenarios as I see it today:

Scenario A: It continues up the coast and passes near the 40/70 benchmark delivering an impactful storm system this weekend.

Scenario B: It heads NE out to sea but grazes SNE with fringe snowfall favoring SE areas. Breezy conditions and higher than normal tides…but wouldn’t be a major deal.

Scenario C: It moves well south of SNE and out to sea completely missing us.

At the moment I think C is the least likely…but it’s still early. My current odds for scenarios A/B/C is 40%/40%/20%.

Timing currently looks like Saturday night and Sunday.

Expect changes as we get more clarity closer to the event. The biggest wildcard right now is how much mixing with sleet near south coastal areas. Timing is roughly 7am Sunday through the first half of Monday with the heaviest Sunday midday through evening. Snow lightens up Sunday overnight into Monday.
