Alone at Dawn is an upcoming film directed by Ron Howard and starring Adam Driver as Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman.

Adapted from the 2019 book by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz, the film follows Chapman’s life and sacrifice at the Battle of Takur Ghar, then jumps forward to the investigation that eventually earned him a posthumous Medal of Honor.

The real incident took place in the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, on Takur Ghar mountain in Afghanistan. Chapman and a small SEAL team were trying to recover a lost teammate when they came under heavy fire from al-Qaeda fighters. Chapman was gravely wounded in the first assault and left for dead as the team withdrew.

He regained consciousness alone, with the enemy closing in, and fought on, first covering his teammates escape, then holding off numerous fighters to protect an incoming rescue force until he was killed. His actions later made him the first Air Force recipient of the Medal of Honor in nearly 50 years.

The film is set for a limited theatrical release on December 25, 2027, followed by a wider release on January 7, 2028.

I ate lunch there in January, it was great. Magnificent young people, and yes defense manufacturing is maddening at times but it must be done.
