Exit velocity, bat speed, and all the data matter. At some point, you do need to hit certain physical thresholds to compete at the highest levels of baseball.
But once you get around players who are all talented, the separator usually isnβt another 2 mph of bat speed.
Itβs mental toughness. Resilience. Confidence. The ability to handle failure. Having a consistent approach. Showing up every day. Competing when things arenβt going your way.
The numbers might get you noticed. Your mindset is what determines how far you go.
Iβve seen plenty of players with elite metrics fail, and plenty of players with average metrics maximize every ounce of their ability because of who they were between the ears.
Train the body. Donβt neglect the mind.
As someone whoβs been singing the National Anthem at rodeo events for over 20 years, Iβll just sayβ¦.
Thereβs a way it was intended to be sung, without your own spin. This was π―the way! Bravo!
West Virginia HC Steve Sabins on West Virginia's track record with multiple D2 transfers and what they look for in them:
"We've had three Division 2 pitchers in our starting rotation for the last three years. All of those guys, by the way, have become draft picks in their senior year...We probably have a little bit of a soft spot for the guy that shows up here hungry, wanting to get better, maximizes his opportunity, and believes that he hit the jackpot playing at West Virginia." - @stevesabins@WVUBaseball

I've watched a lot of Regionals and Super Regionals the last two weeks.
I've seen 95-98 mph heaters.
I've seen 86-92 mph heaters.
You know what I've seen from almost ALL of them?
Pitchability.
Command.
Movement.
Quality secondaries.
Conviction.
Competitiveness.
Velocity gets attention. Certainly. BUT pitchability gets outs.
Find a program, a coach, or trainer, that will help YOU build both. βΎοΈπ

A buddy of mine snapped this picture while I was watching my son play baseball last night. Honestly, it probably captures something I didnβt even realize in the moment.
Like many parents, I sometimes get wrapped up in these games. I think part of it comes from knowing these moments wonβt last forever.
Deep down, we know weβre living through moments weβll someday miss more than we can explain.
These games become more than wins and losses. They become memories.
And while I know thereβs still plenty of baseball left, I also know there will come a day when Iβd give just about anything to sit in a folding chair one more time and watch my kids play ball again.
Final from game 2.
Lions finish the season 33-15. Couldnβt be more proud of this group and all the history they made this season.

Scores from the DIII Baseball Super Regionals.
Weather moved a few games, resulting in Rowan and Salisbury clinching World Series berths on day 1 of the supers. Johns Hopkins and Claremont-M-S split their two games today in back-to-back extra inning affairs.
