@laurameme@lianda_edu i get what you're saying but corpus studies tell us lang. is more formulaic than ppl think. i also like to see my non native-speaking colleagues have the playing field leveled for them (avoid paying absurd editing fees)
@laurameme@lianda_edu no one is saying we should submit ai-generated slop. but the tool is invaluable for editing language and making text clearer - this is especially true for L2 English academics.
Every publisher should ban the use of statistical software like Stata, R, SPSS, etc.! These tools have greatly facilitated academic misconduct such as p-hacking. Scholars should calculate the coefficients, standard errors, and t-statistics themselves using calculators. This would force them to truly engage in empirical work and raise the cost of p-hacking!
@DrCrosthwaite@MizumotoAtsushi So - while I get that people are gaming the system (journal and indiv. levels), there is an argument for such a system to be in place - system just needs tweaking.
Kanto-based colleagues. My program is hiring. Those meeting the stated qualifications who can teach Tuesday / Friday per 1 are especially welcome to apply.

@DrCrosthwaite@mrkm_a it is interesting though -- from my recent AE assignment, there are a lot of ppl who refuse to review despite actively publishing. (no one in my/our circle appears to fall into this category though :) )
@DrCrosthwaite@mrkm_a fully agree and the stepwise driven stuff with lex soph. has had its issues and models including BNC fiction range and COCA (all subcorpora) range are not really reflecting a coherent theory IMHO. with that said,
I get that LLMs can change the 'game' in ways SPSS can't!
@DrCrosthwaite@mrkm_a probably not - but machine learning and related stepwise regression modeling (say lexical sophistication/complexity stuff from last decade) have generated theory for the field before - so it's not completely without precedent.
