To be fair — going into my experience, I had also wondered the same thing. I had every intention to commission, but medical complications diverted that plan. I’m a Citadel alumnus, originally from Cincinnati (no prior ties to the region), and ended up graduating as a civilian.
My personal experience: I wasn’t academically qualified to get into an academy. I’m also not sure I had the baseline maturity to go through the appointment process. I knew I needed structure to have any hope of success in college (I needed an ass kicking). The Citadel delivered.
I was terrified of going to a college filled with high school ROTC kids, but that wasn’t the case either. Best friends I’ll ever have. Because free time was at a premium, we really maximized it. Charleston helps. Not sure how the Norwich or VMI guys do it lmfao but fair play to them!
I’ve also been a DoD contractor for a decade. I can’t speak to the academies, but being well-versed in every branch of the military has been beneficial. We’re surrounded by officers and NCO’s of all branches, which has also helped guys make decisions when commissioning late (this isn’t uncommon).
The state of South Carolina has major military installations represented by every branch as well. So diverse field training exercises are easily accessible. You don’t have to be actively commissioning to partake. As a matter of fact, everyone has to take ROTC all four years as well as ethics courses. I know I’m straying away from your original question (I just wanted to articulate how the state itself caters to a comprehensive military experience and how you don’t need to be commissioning to experience it).
Regional prestige: The attrition process for the academies largely takes place through the application/ appointment process. Attrition at The Citadel takes place when you get there. Cadets aren’t federal investments. It’s a point of pride to cut every incoming class down. I think my incoming class came in with 780 and we graduated around 340. That’s just pretty much how it goes.
There’s a huge legacy aspect as well. A lot of my classmates had brothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers, cousins, etc.
The alumni base is super tight-knit. Regionally, it has prestige. Everyone knows if you’re a grad, you sought out and were able to endure an unorthodox experience, follow an honor code, and make it out the other side.
It’s not for everyone, but it was the best place for many of us.
Michael Gibson has been the best baseball player on earth since the SoCon tournament started May 20th
He’s 16-25 (.640avg) and also thrown 4IP on the mound
The Citadel continues to be scorching hot 🔥
I think The Citadel’s fanbase is one of the most unique in college athletics.
The school has fewer than 40k total graduates in its history, prob ~25k of living graduates from the Corps of Cadets.
But if we know anything about our eventful history — a small number of us can do some serious damage!
Our powder-keg mentality is undoubtedly rooted in the militaristic structure of our collective incubation. Give us a reason to be unleashed and you won’t find a lot of hesitation within this group!
We’re onto Atlanta! Turn us up!

Idc if they’re in your full press, in your office, or in storage. Break those bad boys out tonight and show everyone why we’re the best fanbase in the country.
Uniform is championship attire + shako, field jacket optional. If you’re not in the area, post your pics on socials with the tag. If you’re in the area, #FloodFluorField and help the boys bring the SoCon title back to the Bastion of Antiquity where it belongs!
